What is best deal going for online surplus rifle sale?

I just retired from the Army and settled down...now I want to get into some shooting with my son. I was thinking surplus is the best route dollar/fun wise. I've looked around some online but really need some help with some of you who have combed the market. My local dealer is giving me the military brother man hookup and not charging anything to process a gun I have shipped there so good news...just need to find the right deals.

On a side note I took my son to one of the local ranges on the 1st and they had an M44 Mosin. We test fired it and had a hell of a time...I walked out the door with it for $125. I know there must be some out there for cheaper. I want to get him one also. I think I want an M39 or the M91 that has been cut down (I think it's called an M59???) as I want one without a bayonet to take him hunting. Was also looking at buying a couple of other variety surplus rifle but looking to spend in the $100 range as I will be buying 2. Any help pointing me in the right direction is much appreciated. I'm looking to buy a few different varities of surplus rifle for variety if I can find them at good enough deals.

Also what's best deal going on non-corrosive ammo?

full sized MN's have been selling for well under 100$ and the 44's have been seen for 89. The 38 model that lacks the bayonet usually sells for more than a 44 does. But they are easily under 150. That is depending on where you are and who you are dealing with. At the same show you will see guys with a pile of the rifles and 89$ on them and a guy over in the corner with one or two with 120$ tags hanging off of them. I don't think he sells any there. You could get somebody who has an ffl and charges a processing fee of like 15$ or something and order them wholesale but you don't know what you will get that way. Probably haunt a good sized gunshow or even gunshops that handle surplus guns. THe chain sporting stores are easily highest priced. Some Russian and Eastern Europeans are making sporting ammo for the guns, heavy bullets but soft tips. Pretty cheap. If it is a commercial brand it should be non corrosive. But with any kind of imported ammo these days, if it does not specifically say non corr. don't assume anything.

specific rifles instead of website:
K31 is one of the most accurate production rifles and can easily be had for $300. GP11 is not very cheap and must be ordered online. Straight pull bolt which is interesting.
SKS is one of the most fun and can be had for a little over two. Cheap surplus ammo, although most is corrosive.
In both cases you get a lot of gun for the money.

I'd recommend you get both. I think classic arms has them both in stock.

Be sure to apply for and get your C&R licence. That way you can buy surplus directly from the dealers.

Do a search here and you will get all the info you need to get your very own C+R license.
Danger Will Robinson the license is only 30 bucks for three years, trust me, it costs more than that

I saw some Mosin's for $95 at AIM surplus. non-corrosive ammo, don't know. I just make sure to clean well after range day.

Couple more thoughts.

You should investigate reloading, ultimately you will get more ammo for your money.

I second the rec on a Swiss but would also through a Swede into the mix. They are so accurate and fun, it's amazing. A Swiss is also very accurate.

About the C&R license, not only will it cost you much more than $30 in guns, but you'll spend more at Midway and Brownells and justify it to yourself by "saving" money with the dealer discount!

Just bought two M91/30's from Aimsurplus 69.00 each happy with the condition and packaging of both weapons. Have yet to fire them cuz I am still cleaning the cosmo off, hope to get them out to the range soon though.

Buy an m1 garand from the CMP. Awesome pices of American history, accurate, beautiful, reliable. One of the most fun guns you will ever shoot.

Well, I'm now several surplus rifles in (man is this fun). Need something to use my retirement check on right?

Got an M1 from CMP...love it

Got an SKS...very cool

Got a MN 91/30 and the M44...fun

Got a French MAS, a K31, K98, Carcano, and a few other mausers...

+2 on getting the C&R. It honestly has been the best thing I have done firearms wise in 25 years. Not just the money savings, which is very significant. I have been able to get some really nice commercial firearms using the C&R. I have only bought a few Mil-Surps with the C&R. I have mostly been buying VINTAGE Savage, Hi-Standard, S&W, Colt.

Getting the C&R was very straight foreard, the lady at the licnesing branch was really nice to work with and it came with in 5 weeks.

Everytime I go to bid on something on GB or AA I always send a question first to the seller if that firearm is avail to be shipped direct to a C&R. With that written confirmation I also check the gun against the BATFE list or their standadrd regulations. Then I bid, poof, gets sent direct to me if I win.

Some of the guns I have bought via using my C&R license, the not having to pay FFL dealer transfer fee's alone was a fantastic savings and then the dealer prices on many of them was a bonus. This plus you do not have to fill out 4473's and deal with background checks, unfriendly gun shops etc.

Do you visit gun shows?

Handling the gun and avoiding ship+FFL fees can be the best combination.

For value in a semi-auto larger than .22 with no need to reload (at today's 7.62x39 prices), the SKS, as the modern Russian ammo is Not corrosive. But let's hope that many continue believe that it might be corrosive (less market demand for it).

In a classic bolt-action, the MN (if yours is fairly accurate), OR an
8mm Mauser. Corrosive ammo is quick/ easy to clean and allows so much more shooting.

But...if you are willing to reload .303 or can somehow First find and deliver a large batch of cheap surplus to your home, only Then find a good Lee-Enfield "Jungle Carbine".

The cut down M91/30's are known as M91/59's. Most collectors recognize the quality of these rifles and so you would be lucky to find one under $175. I have found two at $70 each sold by dealers who thought they were M44's (they thought the bayonets were cut off!).
The other Mosin carbine without a bayonet is the M38. They have also risen in price lately. You will be lucky to find one under $130.

If you are near Clarkesville TN and want a very nice MN 91/30 in cosmoline, still in the original Russian crate ($110 each, bayo etc included), "TN Gun Country" still had about ten rifles, three days ago.

A staffer told me that this is their fifth crate.

It took most of my willpower to resist such a fresh 91/30, as the wood/metal appeared to be perfect, but would prefer a second Yugo Mauser. A Czech would be very nice, but most are mostly beaten up, or have bad/terrible bores.
