The optimum submachine gun...

People decry the poor submachine gun, but like a tool in your toolbox it can sometimes be the one that you want to pick up first if the situation is right. So what do you think is the optimum submachine gun and why?

While I think the MP5 A3 is the drop dead sexiest SMG I have to pick the Uzi for ruggedness and all around use. Plus have you priced an MP5 parts kit VS. an Uzi parts kit???

You forgot the Beretta MP12 (yes a lil heavy but damn reliable and accurate) and the SITES M4 (?) with the triple column mags and DA trigger.
I voted for the Colt 635 b/c thats what i used with FAST and its close to the M-16 i use now. Ive fired to MP5A3 in training and it fumbled me up with the controls a little bit but OMG scary accurate and i love those sights! Hey do they make aftermarket sights like that i can throw on my shorty FAL?
Oh the CQB platoon in my unit use M4s b/c of possiblities of engaging vehicles and body armor. However i dont get why cops shy away from SMGs...how many HEAT and Miami shootouts actually happen? thank you and have a nice day!

Hey Wild,

When I was up in Anchorage (stopped by - you were out hunting), went to the range when a bunch of guys were spraying one range. A sixty year old guy who was either Ausie or Brit showed up with a newish Sterling. He a friend of yours?

Nice gun.

The H&K MP5 series. All though the company has an enlarged Ego and prices, Their firearms are built like tanks, extremely dependable, and friendly to southpaws like myself.

Aye, all I remembered was that he was Commonwealthy.

What are the legalities of such build guns? What's the cost?

To address the original topic, didn't HK make an MP5 type SMG in 10mm? That would be nice! If not, I'll take the one they make in 45.

Is the H&K MP10 any good?

I believe RemTek Arms has a review of a 10mm MP5.

More stopping power without the long range of a rifle.

They are about 5K and transferable

I went with the Colt SMG b/c of logistics mainly. Assuming this is for private ownership, the Colt SMG has: a very large replacement parts pipeline, accessories galore, caliber interchangeability, inexpensive magazines, more aftermarket pieces than for any other FA around, almost uncountable sighting options and probably many more reasons I am forgetting as I type this.

Also went with the Colt for the reasons Lucky 7 and Fal308 said. Also the Colt/M16 family has quite good ergonomics compared to the others. The selector is within reach of the thumb so you don't have to break your grip. The mag release at the tip of the index finger. Used in combination with the last round bolt catch (another feature wich some of the above guns lack), mag changes can be faster compared to somethng along the lines of a Calico, Bizon, or even a stock MP5 (I think CQB Arms makes a last round bolt catch accessory for the MP5 though). Mags haven't been too much of a problem with the Colts I've owned; other than being way overpriced they've worked fine, but many people have experienced problems with 9mm Colt M16 mags. Modified Uzi mags work well enough though.

Wild,

If the Sterling was built recently, how is it transferable?

While I'm sure that many may disagree with me, I'd cast my vote for the VZ61 Skorpion. In this age of assault rifles, the submachinegun's usefullness is quickly fading. The Skorpion is as compact as many semi-automatic pistols and easily suppressed. These are two things that can't be said about assault rifles. Also, it is reasonably controlable and the rate of fire is managable, which are two things that can't be said about most other "machine-pistols" of comparable size. Make fun of the .32 if you will but how is a burst of 71 grn bullets any less effective than a round of buckshot?

No one has really commented on cyclic rates and impact on accuracy. I have very limited experience with full auto firearms and that was some 23 years ago now, but I would have thought that the attraction of the MP5 is its slowish cyclic rate aiding accuracy.

Don't Beretta produce a full auto version of the model 92 (?) pistol with extension mag and shoulder stock? I think I saw one once in a magazine. I would stand correcting.

I don't think Beretta makes the M93R anymore. As far as I know there are only 10 units here in the US. I seen them for sale on Guns America like 6 years ago. They were sold by a police department to anyone in the Military or LE. Each M93R included the stock, 3 20rd mags, and a supressor. Each unit wen't for $3000.00

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Beretta model 12. In terms of total production, this is one of the most common modern SMGs. Of course, how many Americans have ever seen one?

BTW, anyone ever fired a full auto Calico? 100 round mag and roller delayed mechanism, like an MP-5.

At the risk of provoking derisive laughter, how about the old STEN? Cheap, simple, accurate, reliable, easy to control, easy to clean, and a magazine that lets the shooter fire prone. Not sexy, but then I never plan to have sex with a subgun, much preferring women.

Clean a Sten?

Last year at Bulletfest, a friend let me run a few mags through his Sten; ran perfectly. When I was done, he mentioned the last (and only) time he ever cleaned it was when he first got it...over 10,000 rounds ago. Thats right, 10,000rds without cleaning and it still ran.
