Stevens Favorite .25 cal Single Shot Rifle - Pic Added
I have a rifle I'm curious to know what it's age might be. Also curious as to a value but that's really not my primary goal.
From what I've read, it's difficult to determine much about these. The condition is not LNIB. The barrel is just over 22 3/8", all octagonal. It has 25 Stevens on the barrel, FAVORITE on top of the receiver. Left side plate has J Stevens A&T Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A. Nothing on the right side. Butt plate has Stevens Favorite molded in. Behind the trigger guard it is stamped 167 or 107. No other markings. I have some pictures but they're too large to upload. I'll have to resize. J Stevens A&T Co. Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A. Puts it between 1886 and 1916 when the works were turned over/sold toNew England Westinghouse for the production of Mosin Nagant rifles for Russia.
A good article on their target pistols here. http://americansocietyofarmscollecto...B021_Kyser.pdf

Wikipedia has what appears to be a decent history of the company.

I had a 25 Stevens in the Favorite model. It looked to be a little better condition than yours (but not much) and I think I sold it for around $125 when I got tired of having to buy cartridges 1 at a time at gun shows. This was about 20 years ago so maybe 25s are available from Europe now, but I gave up. I have a Favorite in 22 but lost all of the moving parts in a fire. I only have the receiver , barrel and wood. If I dont run across parts I will peddle it also. I liked the favorites because one in 22 was my first gun but I am starting to get practical in my old age. Grant.

You could rebarrel to 5mm Rem, 22 WMR or 22LR pretty easily. Keep the original barrel in case you decide to sell it to someone who wants it.

Frank DeHaas recommended against .22 WMR in original Favorites.

You can reline the barrel to .22LR. Some work needs to be done with the firing pin to convert to .22.

I got one of those in 22LR from my grand daddy in law.
It shoots fairly good for what it is. |

The .25 Stevens was introduced right around 1900, so that narrows down the age a bit more.

I had a Stevens Favorite 25 RF and it was in nice shape except the bore. My
gun smith nixed a 22mg conversion too. I gave it to a buddy to hang in his den, after I scuffed the tang sight off it. |

There's a couple 1915 on Gunbroker. One with a starting bid of $250 but no bids. Ends on 28 Oct. The other, a dealer in CT, starts at $275. Ends tomorrow and has no bids either. Likely because they're pure collector pieces, there being no ammo and all.
If you want one as a shooter, there are several in .22 LR on Gunbroker at about $100 less. "...rebarrel to 5mm Rem..." No ammo for that either. Chicopee Falls, Mass. is where Savage made the No. 4 Lee-Enfields.

""...rebarrel to 5mm Rem..." No ammo for that either."
Aguila brought it back a couple of years ago, but now it looks as if it has been discontinued again. Bummer. There's always the 5mm Craig, which is a centerfire version of the 5mm that was designed to salvage unshootable Remington rifles. Easier to just have the barrel relined for .17 or .22, really.

Back in 60s made several hunting & fishing trips to Canada every year. The Ma&
Pa stores and gas stations were still in operation then. I use to check in every place we stopped for ammunition. I bought a lot of rimfire 25 & 32 up there. I sometimes got a package deal on sleeper ammo. I still have several boxes of RF ammo from those days. Seems like 70s commercialized any place you could get to on a paved road and the Ma&Pa operations faded away. Ammo was always expensive in Canada compared to States. I use to bootleg 22 ammo up there for my Canadian friends. I never brought any ammo home with me always gave it away. I'm sure many other guys pumped RF ammo out of Canada, so you're not going to find dusty CIL rimfire laying on a back shelf anymore. |
