Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson says it is between 1954 and 1970, which doesn't help you much. Sorry, unless somebody has a better list, your option may be to pay for a factory letter.
Nice old Smith. |

Hey folks! New to the forum. I have a beautiful S&W model 30-1 2" barrel that belonged to my grandmother. She had it for home defense and fortunately never had to use it. So it's never been shot and brand new still in the box with paperwork. Can someone please tell me the year it was made? The serial # is H98xx
Thanks in advance! |

For Post#8328, there don't seem to be any "H" prefixes with only 4 numbers to follow the "H".
BTW, brand-new would or might mean one's grandmother was an FFL and never sold or transferred the firearm from inventory. H Serial Prefix Models: 30, 31, 1969-1970 H00001-H30001 1971-1972 H30002-H60000 1972-1976 H60001-H99999 1975-1980 H100001-H139900 1981 H139901-H160000 1982 H161001-H161200 1983 H161201-? Hmmm well it definitely is just 4 digits after the H. It's on the bottom of the grip and written on the box.
What I meant by brand new is it basically has been in the box for the past 40 or so years and not scene light of day. Pretty much still brand new in my book. |

The old NRA conditions were
New: Not previously sold at retail, in the same condition as factory produced. Perfect: In new condition in every respect. An antique could be described as New if it were unused even if you could not say that it had not been sold. Brought home and left unused in Grandpa's bureau drawer, ok, new. |

Help please identify model and year, barrel marked .32 S&W Long and it's a snub nose. Numbers under the crane are 37xxx and also a separate 9 and a separate N. Made in Springfield, Mass. Number on the butt is 620490.
Thank you! Last edited by BuckeyeBoys; November 3, 2021 at 01:49 PM. |

The book does not break it down real well but shows post war production starting at serial number 536685 in 1948 and production ending at 826977 in 1991. It also mentions that the dash 1 (J frame) started in 1961 at serial number 712954 so, you would be pretty close to that date.

Yes there is a V on the beginnng of the serial number.
But it was far left of the numbers. That’s how I knew it was a victory model |

I figure the chrome finish and the pearl handles were not original.
