Smith and Wesson serial number search

I know this isn't a revolver, but this seems like the best place for my request.

Can Anyone tell me any info on my newly acquired S&W model 3913 s/n: VAV11XX


I bought it from a co-worker for 275.00 and he said he never shot it, or took it out of his safe. I put a couple hundred rounds through it last weekend and it seems to shoot great except for it ejects brass directly at my forehead. I ordered a whole spring kit from wolff gunsprings for it, maybe that will help.

S&W model 3913 s/n: VAV11XX

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is incomplete as far as serial numbers for their semi autos go.
That said, the basic 3913 was made from 1989 to 1999 and the "V" prefix stated in 1994.
To get a closer date you would need to call S&W's customer service. They will give you the DOB over the phone for free.

I got one for ya ,,how about a model 10-6 ser # 3582x,,,,,4 inch bull barrel ,ok ya guys ready for this cause heres where I get weird looks,,its chambered in 357 magnum,,,,you read that correctly 357 mag lol,,I know I know I`ve heard it a hundred times before that smith &Wesson didn't make the model 10 in 357,well I have one,,it belonged to my dad who carried it when he was a policeman,, he told me a story that when smith was introducing the model 686 a sales rep stopped by the pd and was trying to sell the 686 to some of the officers, my dad asked the guy if he had ever seen a model 10 in 357, the guy said no and that he had heard of it and would like to see one,,well my dad unholstered unloaded and handed it to the guy,,the guy drooled all over it and offered my dad his pick of any 686 he had in the show case and $500 cash,,,back then that was a pretty good offer but my dad refused took the gun back reloaded and reholstered it. I have emailed sith &Wesson and inquired about the gun but I`ve gotten different stories, one is that the gun was special made for some state police agency back east,,i cant remember if they said new York or new jersey but they offered no other info than that, the other story was that they were making the model 10 then switched over to the model 27 and that some of the 10`s must have been still on the line and got chambered and stamped 357 magnum, and again offered no other info,,,what the real story is with this gun? I have no clue, it is stamped under the yoke 10-6 it is stamped on the right side of the barrel 357 magnum, it does shoot 357 loads,,ive fired many a rounds thru the gun, I tried to get some pics of the gun but its too hard to see the letters and numbering with my cheap little camera or I`d load up some pics for ya , whatever the story is with the gun I don't care, it was my late fathers, he carried it on duty, I too carried in the beginning of my cop career , its the most accurate revolver I have ever shot, my dad killed a mountain lion with it in Arizona and I`ve killed a deer with it here in Missouri, its a gun with a story to tell and it will be handed down to one of my sons (they can fight over it when im dead and gone,so I don't have to listen to `em )

That's not the serial number. Take it from the underside of the frames grip butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it. It likely has a "D" prefix.

That said, in 1972 several thousand model 10-6's with 4" heavy barrels were chambered in 357 magnum for the NY state police. None were marked as such though. These were the predecessor to the model 13 that started in 1974.
While not common, they are not rare.

Yup you are right I looked at the wrong number,,,it is D7071xx.

With original box/paperwork in minty condition (no finish wear) I'd say $600.

Hi, Wanted to ask here before paying the $50 for a factory letter. I have a model 36 which I believe to be a chiefs special. Would consider it at about 90%, no box or papers. It has a 1 7/8 pinned barrel, is blued with the walnut grips with the diamond carving around the screw holes of the handles. 5 shot with a fixed front sight, The frame has stampings consisting of "Y" above the numbers 60434 with the number "8" below that number. SN# on the butt is 123XXX. Any help DOB, is it truly a chiefs special etc would be very appreciated, thx in advance.

If it was a S&W it would have been stamped on the side of the barrel and again on the frame.
That said, S&W did use the serial number you listed. It was for the Victory models made for the military during WWII.

SN# on the butt is 123XXX.

The serial number dates it to 1957.
That's the same year that S&W began assigning/stamping model numbers.
The Chiefs Special became the model 36. They are one in the same.
