Crimson Trace Grips for S&W J-Frame
I was leafing through a catalog and noticed there are two different versions of Crimson Trace Laser Grips for S&W J-Frame revolvers. They're listed as:
S&W J-Frame, 3.15" tall, exposes, LG405 and S&W J-Frame, 3 1/2" tall, conceals, LG305 Both versions are shown installed on S&W 642s and I can't tell the difference between them. Someone who knows, please explain to me what the one version 'exposes' and the other 'conceals'. Thank you.

405 exposes bottom of frame, 305 (a little longer) conceals bottom of frame

The 305, being a bit longer, is a bit easier to grip, especially of you have larger hands. That being said, those who use a J frame as a CCW seem to prefer the 405 as it is a bit easier to conceal. I can't carry in my state, so I appreciate the extra length of the 305 on my model 60. And unlike the stock grips on the J frame, the Crimson Trace Lasergrips cover the backstrap with a layer of padding which cuts down the effect of recoil on the web of the hand.

If you plan on pocket carrying the CT 405s (smaller) are what you want.
If you IWB/OWB or pocket carry with a shirt or jacket concealing your pocket or deep pockets the 305s might work for you if you prefer a full grip. You can simulate the 305s by trying a set of Hogue Monogrips they are about the same length as the 305s. I like the recoil reducing pocket on the 405s as well. I suspect if you do a search you will find all sorts of information. Take a look at this. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthrea...81#post4252981 I have 405s on a 642 and a 340. |

Hmm, might have to get one of those side-mount lasers. I really like my current grip and would hate to give it up.

The grip gets replaced too. See the switch?

I have a CTC LG-105 on my 638. Feels like it came from the factory and carries very easily. Also can be found a lot cheaper than the 305 or 405.
http://www.crimsontrace.com/Home/Pro...2/Default.aspx My wife doesn't like it - its not for everybody. She has the 305 on her 642. |

In doing some research between lasermax and Crimson trace there are pros and cons. Lasermax's laser is more closer to the bore and you don't have to resight them when you change out the batteries. Bad news is you have to switch it on to active it, with crimsom trace being a "grab and go" button. Personally I find Crimson trace to be more pleasing to the eye, the laser max look like the Borg from Star Trek got to your revolver.
The reason why I need a laser on my revolver is for self defense and Crimson Trace's features fit the role better. If you need a laser for a target/hunting I would go with a lasermax. |

I'm considering getting a pair of Crimson Trace Grips for my K frame model 67 the LG207's. I see most posters comment on their use in dim light and darkness. The pistol ranges that I go to are quite bright. Do the grips work well in normal light as well, or only in dim light?
I'm also trying to track down if they are even legal in NYC. (I have an NYC Pistol Permit but shoot in Nassau County Long Island, NY) Thanks, Bubsy |
