Skyline WMA in Alabama

To my fellow Alabamians;

How good is the deer hunting at Skyline WMA? I would like to give it a shot and if I do so, it would be my first time hunting deer.

I have a Turk Mauser that I can use, and with it I can hit a 8 inch paper plate at 200 yards (using field positions) with acceptable regularity (7-8 times out of ten).

Will this rifle be acceptable? Is there a good chance of getting a good eating deer? Not intereseted in a trophy, just venison.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

The October issue of Alabama Game and Fish has an article about the top deer hunting counties and WMA's in Alabama, including a ranking of the top 20 WMA's relative to the 2001 deer harvest. Martin-Skyline was listed #14, FWIW.

Good luck and happy hunting!
