Carry Knives to accompany your daily CC setup

I have long carried a knife on me, well before ever getting my concealed pistol license. I don't really consider them a weapon so much as a tool, though one that can certainly be improvised as a weapon if need be. After reading many threads here on TFL, I have come to learn that many of us carry knives on a daily basis, and it led me to think:

What kind of knife do you prefer to carry?

I have carried many different knives over the years, trying different brands, styles and sizes. I tend to favor a standard drop- or clip-point blade, as I find them so utilitarian. I have made use of tanto-tip knives before, and while I like the added durability, I always seem to end back at a clip/drop-point.

I've bounced between folders and fixed-blades, too. I generally carry a folder, since they are readily available and easily carried. I've had problems with a number of folders, though, from various companies, and had switched to a fixed blade for a while. After the first lock failed, I've always been a bit wary of a folder and its possibility to close on my fingers.
I won a new Gerber skeletal frame folder in my last shooting competition, which has become my carry choice, being more easily concealed and less inimidating to others when I produce a knife for simple tasks. Apparently carrying a fixed blade can be interpreted as menacing, since it breaks the norm of folding pocket knives.

Does anyone carry a karambit? I am consider moving to one from a drop-point, but haven't handled one in some time. I wonder how much they provide general flexibility for tasks that a knife can perform, beyond simple defensive combat. The forward curved blade makes me wonder how they handle for anything but forward cutting.

Up until recently a SOG Flash. Now I've discovered the folding Razel from CRKT. I've had a couple of the fixed blade razels for awhile but carrying a fixed blade here is problematic legally. I use the SS7 Razel fixed blade as a brush cutter for early deer season when I may need to trim shooting lanes for some of my bow stands.

I have carried a karambit on a few occasions - I don't see much utility in the knife. I also find it to be a very specialized defense tool. If you want to carry one for defense I would highly recommend getting some karambit specific training.

I prefer to carry two knives - one on a keychain for basic tasks like opening boxes or loaning out to a co-worker and one longer folding knife for other tasks. Having done a small bit of knife work I am of the opinion that your defense knife should be as long as humanly possible given your circumstances. Currently I carry a CRKT-McGinnis Summa because the knife is easy to deploy, has a bit of length and is easy to carry daily. It's also quite inexpensive so I don't have to worry about losing it or banging it up. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I am friends with Gerry.

If you use a single knife for both utility and defense at least make sure you sharpen it after use. A sharp knife is imperative for all tasks, but if it's ever needed to save your life then you want as much advantage as you can get.

I carry an Emerson CQC-7A everyday at work. It is identical, except the spear point blade and wave opening feature, to the "weaponized" Emerson CQC-7BW I carry when I'm not at work.

The CQC-7BW has a contour (hook) on the top of the blade that allows the user to snag it on the pocket hem of trousers to open one-handed as the knife is withdrawn from the pocket. Demo video: http://www.emersonknives.com/videos/CQC-7.MPG

I carry a waved Spyderco in my left pocket accessible by my off-hand. If limited to knife-only, I usually carry a Cold Steel Voyager X2 in the appendix position.

take a look at this. I live by one. all different colors. size etc. i use it as a tool not a weapon. pretty cheap too. if your gona carry a karambit get one of this. good luck

I currently carry a CRKT M16. I like the added lock feature, unlike many of my friends. Only downside (on my model) is that its a combo-edge, and I'd much rather have straight edge. But hey, it was on sale.

Re concealment and the carrying of edged weapons as a compliment to any firearms, I usually carry a Spyderco Pikal and a Shivworks Clinch Pick. Sometimes a Benchmade CBK gets rotated in in lieu of the Clinch Pick.

I dont have a carry permit (to young), but I have carried a knife for year, first was a Spyderco paramilitray (blade was 3/32" to long

), Leatherman PSTll, and now my Leatherman Charge TTi.

The charge is my favorite because it is a solid hunk of metal that is like a club and all the blades can be used on handed and lock. Not to mention I am in the shop at school a lot and it is useful. And with being on a campus it is better to carry a Leatherman because it is considered more of a tool then a weapon by most.

I tried a Benchmade mini Styker Nitro or something but after going through 3 of them because of a nic in the blade I gave up on them (design flaw).

Fixed blades are the best if you're able to carry one. I prefer the push-dagger. Failing that (if I'm in a state where they're illegal) I'll carry something like the CRKT Kasper/Polkowski Companion.

For folders, I prefer waved Spydercos (P'Kal, Endura, or Delica), Benchmades, or Cold Steel.

I wouldn't bother with a Kerambit. I bought one a few years ago just to get some experience with one and I feel that they're a little too "task-specific" to really be ideal.

I wanted to start wearing a Buck fixed blade but as others have said-fixed blades can get you the wrong kind of attention.

I'll probably use a Buck folding as a standby.

I carry two knives, a CRKT M-16 and a small Kershaw. I use them every day for all sorts of jobs but do not think of them as serious defensive weapons. For an untrained person, they are vastly inferior for that job when compared to the many close at hand improvised bludgeoning tools. As a last resort, they do beat bare hands.
