Production dates desired
I own two S & W hand guns and would like to find out what there productions dates are.
1. A 357/38 mod 66-1 revolver with the following numbers. 109K713 with 215X6 below that. 2. A 41 mag model 57 with the following numbers 14X74 and A4 below that. I know from reading numerous posts in this section that there is a publication showing numbers and dates but I plan on selling the S & W's that I have so I have no need to purchase the publication. So, any help on the productions dates for these two guns would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your help with this. |

The numbers for the model 57 are assembly numbers. Get the serial number from the underside on the grip frame. It will likely have a S or N prefix. If you have target grips you will need to remove them to see it. Jim |

Good morning everybody. I want to thank in advance everybody who is posting replies for people requesting year/dates for their firearm (especially since I'm asking). I'm not a collector or anything but am selling a S&W for a friend, otherwise I'd buy the book. Could someone give me an idea of a revolver with the serial number of 488xxx. If you have any info to pass that would be good, I don't even know the type so I can't look up specifics on line.
Anything you could pass on to help would be greatly appreciated. |

What is it chambered in? 38 special, 38 S&W, 22, 357 etc. Is it a 5 or 6 shot? Is it a modern swing out cylinder or an older tilt barrel to load/unload? Jim |

This is .38 special. 6 shot. modern cylinder. The number 41971 is stamped on the crane (I think that's what it is called) and the number 488174 is stamped on the cylinder.
Here's a picture. |

The 42971 is an assembly number. While most manufacturers call it the crane, S&W calls it a yoke. Jim |

I just traded for a model 49. The serial number is 525xxx. Can anyone help me with the date of manufacture?

On the underside of the grip frame see if there is "V". It might be on the opposite side of the lanyard swivel from the serial numbers. If there is a V prefix then it's "Victory" model made around 1943/44 for the war effort. Quote:
