My book only covers up to 2004. Yours was made after that. If you contact S&W customer service they will give you the DOB over the phone.

3 S&Ws

I have three S&Ws that I would like to know the "born on" date for: One is a Model 27 with 6" barrel - N4784XX. Another is a mint-ish safe queen Model 27 with 8 38" barrel (bought it many years back as "unfired", but it has a light ring around the cylinder) - N1847XX, and the last one is another safe queen (and pretty sure this one has not been fired - absolutely mint) Model 19-4, with 4" barrel - 40K90XX. I 'think' the 8 3/8 one is around 1973, and the 4" is 1979. Curious to know if I am right on the age of the two I think I know, and the age on the other one. Thanks.

I'm looking at a 39 and trying to determine if it's C&R. Can anyone tell me the serial range for 1967? Is there info down to the month level?

The Standard Catalog of S&W shows little data for semi autos prior to 1970. Best guess would be in or around the 70000 range. Problem is, they were not shipped in the same order made. Only a letter from S&W will provide you with an actual ship date (which you would likely need to prove C&R). You can try asking the question on the semi auto section of the S&W forum. Maybe someone with a factory lettered 39 with a ship date in early 1967 could give you a serial number.

Oops, I missed that this was revolvers. Sorry about that.

So it's ship date that matters, not manufacture date?

I'm no expert on the rules for C&R, but, in this case the manufacture date is important as it must be at least 50 years old. That said, if the ship date was 1 Sept 1967 then the manufacture date would have to be 1 Sept 1967 or earlier.

S&W Model 18-3

Recently picked up a S&W Model 18-3, serial #8K311XX. Good condition w/ some holster wear.
Would really appreciate a ship date on this old .22 revolver.

Thanks,
Bruce

It's a WWII "Victory" model. Serial number dates it to 1942/43. The U.S. Navy markings greatly increase it's value.

Wow and thank you Jim.. I never would have thought that it was that old as it looks as though it was never or rarely fired and handled. No wear on the bluing or anywhere else.. It is an amazing gun that I thought was a replica. So again, thank you very much. As I am unfamiliar with this one, what is the best way to determine value? I really have no intention of selling, but would just like to have an idea.

Well, first off, it's 6 shot so it would not be a model 36. It appears to be a 38 Military & Police (pre model 10). The serial number with no prefix would date it to around 1941. If it has a "S" prefix, which could be a half inch or so before the numbers, then it would date to about 1946. Either way, the barrel does not look correct for that era. The front sight should be a half moon, not a ramp. It's possible someone re-shaped it or the barrel is a replacement.
