I looked into buying one online a while back, called the local gunshop.
They asked if it was a new gun. I said yes.
The told me $100.00 for the transfer. I laughed in their face and bought it new...from another dealer.
Would that have been in Middle Island? They told me 30% of the price he would charge for the same new gun. I just walked out of the store and won't be going back.

The last one I bought through Gunbroker.com, it cost me $20 (that was a couple of years ago). I don't know what he charges now.

The last one I got, I had sent to my brother's LEO buddy (and FFL holder), and he didn't charge me anything. Like the expression goes, "Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then".

But $100 for an FFL transfer? No way, Jose! :barf:

There are two that I use. The first charges $20 per transfer. The second charges $30 for any number of transfers. I rarely can afford multiple purchases however.

Around here it's 35-50 bucks. I've never bothered. The stuff I want dealers have on their shelves. I'm not a "support your local dealer" kind of guy, but ordering online just seems a hassle to me. I've ordered a few C&R guns, but they get shipped right to me. I figure if I have to drive to an FFL anyway, I might as well buy if from him in the first place.

My guy charges 20 bucks. He specializes in 6.8 AR's and doesn't stock anything else so transfering through him doesn't really cost him any business.

I tend to buy local or at gunshows most of the time. There are the exceptions though where a deal can make sense given shipping and transfer fees.

Example:
Got a Used Rem 11-87 SP with 2 barrels off gunbroker for 399.00 +20.00 shipping + 20.00 transfer. Sold one of the barrels for 150.00.

I now have a 290.00 11-87. Another of my local shops (only one that had an 11-87 SP in stock) wanted 550.00 for the same gun in the same condition.

Another example:
NIB Ruger LCP from Wildalaska for 279.00 shipped. Paid 20.00 transfer fee. If I'd bought one locally for 279.00 I would have paid 7.5% sales tax on that. You do the math.

Of course I still can't find one locally and when dealers get them in they are selling for 335.00 plus tax as fast as they get them.

Sometimes online is a better deal even with the fees. Sometimes it isn't. Shop smart.

Hassle ? hardly... takes 5 minutes to set up gunbroker account. See something on there you want? click bid, enter bid and its done... its just as simple as ebay.

Id like to support my local stores but some of them act like they almost dont want your bussiness.
Do you know how many return phone calls Ive never gotten from dealers ive called wanting a specific gun and get the " i will have to call and ck my supplier and call ya back" answers.....
On most guns Ive gotten online I have saved $20-$100 thats including the shipping and transfer charge. And thats not counting the tax im not paying which is 8-10% depending on which dealer I go to...
I was looking at a 9mm online the other day and the total would be $475 shipping, transfer and all.... went to one of the locals who had one in stock and his price was $539+tax. Told him I could get one for $475 and would he match that + tax. he asked where from and I told him online, he laughed and told me I was crazy and that most of the "online stuff" was a scam to take your money needless to say I wont buy anything from his store again.

I have found that no one else's standard of "great", "like new" or "mint "condition is as high as mine.
thats always a fear of mine, buy something sight unseen and its not what its supposed to be. even if you can return it for a refund, you're out the cost for delivery and the cost to ship it back!
I've been very lucky on the bigger auction sites as well as here on TFL. never had a bad purchase or trade.
my wife still thinks i'm crazy to send money or guns to a stranger....

Because I am one of his best customers buyers, sometimes my dealer forgets to charge me, maybe one outa 5. He charges $20. One advantage of buying online is...some guns you can't find locally...like this one I am selling now...take a look. As of today...488 people have viewed it. So you get lots of exposure.

There must be a law in Florida requiring dealers to charge MSRP or more. When I buy online even after paying shipping and transfer fees I end up paying $100 or so less then the price charged for the same gun at any dealer in my area.

Mine (Sporting Arms, Lewisville, TX) charges $20 as of the first of this year (used to be $15). Great people to deal with--if you are in the DFW area, or even if you're not, check them out.

I can walk there in well under 5 minutes

I pay 25 dollars plus I have to listen to a story about how the Internet is putting them out of business. I saved 100 dollars buying my M&P online vs. at my shop...I'll spend an extra 30-50 (tax included) to keep my shop moving but that's all I can do.

I do make a point to buy holsters, reloading components (powder and primers), magazines, and anything else they carry...will try to spend an additional 50 or so when I get something transferred in (usually a holster for the gun).

My favorite dealer charges something like $25 or $35. However, I decided to give him $100 for each as I was not just doing a transfer from a private person but using his FFL to get dealer prices from wholesalers. Also nearly all of the guns I was buying were over $1000.

One of my local shops charges $80 to ship a gun for me and the other charges $45-$50. I found a local guy through Gunbroker that charges $20 to receive a gun (the first time using him) and $15 all following times I use him. He also charges me $30 to ship guns if I have to do a FFL to FFL transfer.

Yes, but if you go to one enough and bring them enough business, they may stop charging you.
I don't pay for transfers anymore.

My dealer charges $25 to take a gun in or ship it out ... seems fair .. I don't buy guns online, but I do shop the Austin gun show before I buy a new gun ... just saved $103 on my new Kimber Ultra Carry II over the price my dealer was asking ... sorry, I just can't justify spending more than $100 extra to keep the guy in business ... if it's close, I'll buy from him ... but $100 buys a lot of .45 caliber practice ammo ...

20.00 to do a transfer. 20.00 to ship and he does the packaging. He accepts shipments from non FFL holders. Some of the local shops charge as much as 55.00 and wont accept from non FFL's.

I've only purchased two long distance. In each instance, I was also buying from my local dealer and I'm a good customer. Local dealer did not charge me anything but usually charges $35. I will not abuse that and would prefer to pay a bit more to a local dealer.

That what mine charges too. He's way out in the country, but it's a nice drive. (With gas prices what they are, it may be cheaper for me to pay $20 in town.) I think he might charge $15 or $20 for non NRA members.

I've ordered one gun from him, and had 2 or 3 transferred in. He doesn't have any inventory, just transfers and special orders.

I've never heard of one who doesn't and I certainly don't begrudge the FFL compensation for services rendered.

On the other hand, the guys who want 50-80 bucks can go fly a kite as far as I'm concerned.

My FFL charges $20. He tells me that he does between 10-15/week and the proceeds go to his ammo fund!

My FFL charges $20 and the background check is free. That fee is a flat rate for every purchase, whether I transfer 1 gun at a time or 10.

I highly reccomend him to everyone I know and he makes a few hundred dollars a month of pure profit just by doing transfers. It also brings alot of people through his shop that buy his items with a mark up.
