Yes, swing out cylinder. .38 S&W (not special). 5 shot

Ok, then it's either a .38 Regulation Police (pre-war) or .38/32 Terrier (pre-war)
The Regulation Police will have a square butt and the Terrier a round butt. See pic.
Serial numbers for the Regulation Police ran from 1 in 1917 to 54474 in 1940.
Serial numbers for the Terrier ran from 38976 in 1936 to the same 54474 in 1940.
Either way, it looks like your gun would be in the 1938 to 1940 range.

N190081 would be 1973.

Hi there!
Can anybody tell me the year oft my 686/3?
The serial number is BFS40xx.
Any help greatly appreciated.

My book only covers up to 2004. Your serial number dates after that. S&W customer service will provide you with the DOB of your gun for free over the phone.
