Famous Last Words.

I have made some quality decisions while out hunting, usually accompanied by statements like, "I think that limb is plenty strong enough to hold my weight", or " I think I've got plenty of clothes on, no colder than it is", or I'm not going to take a compass, I know every inch of this property, by heart" and my all time favorite " That buck crossed the creek right here, and the ice was strong enough to hold him".

Any the rest of you guys made any quality decisions latley?

I've had my share of moments while outdoors that I regret...What was I thinking when I crossed that ' frozen ' pond that time? Have you ever walked 3 miles while soaking wet in 35 degree weather? I was lucky to live...

My favorite famous last words ought to be on a redneck's tombstone ....It is usually some thing like " watch this!!!! " or " I can PROVE to you that these boots are fireproof "

We've all had our brainless moments.....some more than others...

It was bore-sighted, and it "should be" close enough.

'the limb is plenty strong enough' When I was about ten ,two of use were building a tree house .Nailing boards across branches of a pine tree we got to a point where I said 'don't go any farther the branches are too small' He said 'no , it's ok" Hammering the next board in and the branches broke !! He fell 30 feet but only suffered brui ses !!

"Yeah, sure I can sit on the edge of that cliff and then push out that rock down there by my feet"

"That's not wet moss on that mid-creek rock, it's just a little different color"

"I can leap that fence"

"I can wade this rose thicket, it's not that thick"

"That cliff is an easy climb"

Sadly, all of these had been said/thought by yours truly in the field within the last couple years.

Yeah, some of my personal favorites from an incident best forgotten ...

"I'll just toss the spare tire out right here in camp, because I'll need the cargo space to haul the deer if we get one." Wait for it.

"I think this dirt road will get better." They never do.

"Well, we've come too far to turn back now." Really? And going forward will improve the situation, how?!

"Don't worry, the tires are good... " Ker-thunk.

"... and I've got a spare." No you don't, you dummy, it's back at camp.

Do you know how far eight miles is, on foot?

How about "You'll never hit that from here" or conversely "I can hit that easy from here".

(One of) ...The stupidest things I've done outdoors

It was in South Texas about six years ago with a couple of friends on a cow hunt.

We had gathered and penned about eighty head out of a 2,000 acre pasture my friend had leased and was selling to a contract buyer coming the next morning. We planned on camping at these pens that night, load the next morning, get his check, and then we'd head for the house.

So after we got everything squared away we get to drinking some cold beer. We spent about two hours sitting around a mesquite wood fire congratulating ourselves on how smart we were, and how everything had gone so smooth that day.

After a couple of hours we had managed to drink what must have been about a Kazillion beers, so we decided it was time to cook some steaks and potatos for supper.

We found some cinder blocks to put around the fire to hold up a grill and were just about to lay these big old steaks on the grill, and put these potatos to cook.

I like an idiot, and a rather drunk one at that, reached over to adjust the cinder blocks, picking one of them up with my bare hand. I actually was so drunk, I picked it up and held it till my hand sobered up enough to realize what an assinine act it had committed.

I spent the next hour with my idiot hand buried down in the ice chest, watching my two (so-called) pals rolling on the ground laughing at how funny it was to see some fool reach over and pick up something which had lain in a mesquite fire for two full hours.

I've done other stupid stuff, but this is one of the dumbest.

Two that immediately come to mind are...

"Aw heck, I don't need a fording package on this ol' Jeep. The river ain't that deep."

And...

"Sure is slow huntin' today. Bet that hornet's nest will make a good target".

Yesterday

"I can stalk around in this rain and stay dry, since I have on a good rainjacket."

Tell us what happened this year, exactly, WBB - was it the limb thing or another one. You're still here to tell us about it, so it must not have been too bad.

Ha-Ha, exactly. I also did that Saturday - damn I got eaten up by mosquitoes for about an hour, until the wind kicked up, thankfully.

After just getting to the other side of the creek on Saturday afternoon "that log looks pretty solid to take my last step onto"

Also Saturday, "That doesn't look too steep. Hell, look at all the elk rubs on the slope, if he can stand there and accomplish that, I can easily climb down"

"My boots are higher than that water looks"

"5 feet should be plenty enough lead on that antelope.

Wasn't me this year FF, but I actually heard, and watched this happen.

Circumstances- Low water crossing (6" deep) water running very swiftly, 20 ft water hole on both sides of crossing, which is about 3 ft wide, muddy water.

I actually heard my buddy say "These 250 Hondas, have big enough tires, that they will float across.

Results- They actually do float- just upside down, and about 1/2 mile down the creek.

I couldn't laugh to hard at him because this was the same buddy that pulled me out of an Icy creek several years ago.

Yeah, floating is never good. Even if he'd have stayed right-side-up, not having your tires in contact with the bridge is not conducive to staying ON the bridge.

I'll just cut down thru here and catch the main trail.
I can follow this deer trail thru this patch of devils club.

The mud shouldn't be that deep.
If I go fast enough my boat will just skip over the shallows and back into the channel.
I can still see.

"I can get my truck across that wash, it's not THAT steep on the other side, I'll just hit it hard and fast..." Narrow wash, deeper than it looked, and on angle. Front bumper on the top of the far bank, rear bumper dug in half way down the first, tires not really touching anything enough to do more than sit and spin.

"Well, the deer are still out in that blizzard, and I bet they're not going far."
Nope, they probably weren't, and neither was I! Got up into some ice damage following a deer trail, fell off a couple of logs and decided going back was a better idea than getting hurt. My rifle, scope and shoulders were growing icicles that day!

Or, "Watch that ice, honey, it doesn't look... CRACK!" And she told me to be careful too. Doh! Cold wet feet and legs are cold wet feet and legs. Only had to hike about a mile that day.

All time favorite from hunting and fishing, "That rock looks pretty solid. I'll just hop onto it and..." SPLASH! Always fun, always makes everybody laugh later when they see you.

Where did that dang stump come from?
Those ruts aren't deep, I'll just straddle them.
Oh, I can make that.... I have a 4-wheel drive.
This ground is solid enough to hold ya.
I could make that shot with a pistol.
I can shoot through those weeds, that bush, or limbs.
It isn't going to rain today.
Fishing.... honey, you're stuck, just throw me your fishing rod and I'd get it free.
Where did I put those shells?
I can wade that, I have chest waders.

Rangefinder-
I did that same thing in a creek in January one time. No winch either. Had to cross the creek, so I looked for a place with riffles (shallower water), drove down into the creek and just as the rear bumper drug on the bank, the front bumper hit the opposite bank. My pickup fit perfectly between the two banks. Do you know how hard it is to chop away at a frozen creekbank with a military entrenching tool in January when you are standing up to your knees in icy water?

I'd like to say I learned my lesson, but I know better.
