Shooting low and right
I took my 1911 out this weekend and shot 50 rounds through it.
I noticed I was consistently hitting low and right. As I was aiming for center mass, I would squeeze the trigger, and follow through, but my shots were not hitting center mass. Target distance was 10 yards. Shooting remington UMC 230gr FMJ's. Should I be doing a 12 o'clock hold on center mass or should I be doing a 6 o'clock hold on center mass?

Are you right- or left-handed? What hold are you using? Either way, shift your lower(support) hand slightly away from the trigger, laying that thumb firmly in front of your gripping hand. Pull into your fingers with your support hand a little tighter. Use caution for hammer/slide bite.

Left handed. I use the standard "support hand forward and thumb resting on the right side of the slide"

low right for a leftie would indicate you are anticipating recoil. Randomly load 1-2 snap caps in your magazines then shoot. When you hit a snap cap take careful note to what you do to the gun. I'm sure you'll catch yourself pushing it down....

There is a target there at the bottom of the list to help with your troubleshooting this issue. One for lefties and one for righties. Last edited by Capt. Charlie; February 22, 2011 at 01:58 PM. Reason: Fixed bad link |

I was thinking of doing a ball and dummy test, but I ran out of time. I'll have to try that next time.

+1 sirsloop
I randomly loaded snap caps when my wife first started shooting, both revolver and semi. I noticed her flinching before shooting. She started figuring out what she was doing wrong after about 100 rounds. She's a southpaw also.
