Winchester Model 94 AE in 444

Can I have your thoughts on the rifle and the caliber for deer and boar out to two hundred yards. Also the general impression of the 444 Good or Bad?

Perfectly adequate for deer and hog out to 200.

It is a step up mass and energy wise from the 30-30 and the 30-30 is adequate to the task.

As a leftie the AE ejects brass in m face. I had one thru my teen years, and sold it when I was in my early 20's. Good gun so no worries there. The 444 round is a very devastating round within 100yds, and still a killer out to 200 (as stated above). Recoil is around the 300WM level, so it may/may not be a nice range gun for you. The 94's are not known to be tack drivers but will get the job done.

444 Marlin is adequate out to 250 yds. The Winchester 94 AE is lighter than the Marlin 444, so recoil will be sharper.

Works on everything from squirrels to elephants! I believe the Hornady 265 grain loads have around 3400 ft lbs of muzzle energy....just right for squirrels.

Are you looking at a regular M94 .444 with 20" barrel and full magazine, or the .444 Timber Carbine with ported 17 3/4" barrel and short magazine? I had a Timber Carbine .444, weighed 6 pounds even, recoil was STOUT with the small and narrow M94 stock. I had trouble breaking the cross bolts of the Weaver scope rings, twice, and shook reticle loose in a Burris 1 3/4 x 5 scope. Great whitetail deer brush gun, a delight to carry, quick to the shoulder, deadly on deer with 265 gr. Hornady bullets. Just not much fun at the range.

I have a 94 Timber Carbine in 444 and I agree with oldidaho that recoil is stout. Not a rifle you want to shoot a box of ammo through in one sitting.

The big bore's are cool though and something a little different than everyone else in camp.
