Big S&W revolver fan here two of my best are: Model 686- P 357 Mag. 6” and my old model 64 38 spec.

The N-Frame S&W. Any caliber and any vintage. It's a great revolver.

Nice write up Winchester. It kinda makes me want one hearing the story behind them, but wow, I'm not the kinda guy ti pay 4K for gun. (mostly cuz I don't have 4K!) Wow I didn't see that coming. I thought it was going to be one of those 1200 guns which may be doable with some juggling.

I found something out too, That the model 28 was/is the plain jane version. My mom had a 28 when I was growing up and it was very nice gun and I shot it alot. Then dad bought a mdl 29 and that pretty much ended my relationship with .357 bores for many many years. Perhaps I'll pick me up a used 28 sometime, I have enough imagination to make it Pattons gun for a moment even if I don't have the cash.

Well all depends on one's point of view!

I think the Ruger BH line is the best revolver out there. A working man's gun at a working man's price. Built to last, low part count, easy to disassemble, and of course are accurate and get the job done. Nice choice of calibers. Plus they look good too (compared to a S&W at least).

Best 'historical' is of course the SAA Colt .

Thanks. Ya they are expensive but its all relative. If you spend $4000 and its really worth $6000, or even $4500, (things happen in today's economy) then really, its cheap in actuality.

The one pictured in that post by me is probably a $6000 to $8000 gun IMO.
The barrel length is rather common for those BUT it has condition, and its a complete package and its all original. Its hard for me to save up that kind of money because I find guns in the $300 to $700 range that I just love and I hate to pass up opportunities for what tomorrow could bring.

28s are great guns. The thing you talked about with 357 then later 44 magnum happened in my family. Out of everyone, there was hardly a 357 magnum but everyone had a 44 magnum, and many had multiple 44 mags because back then, it was the cool factor, in the 70s.

Refer to post #24 for my 3 N frame 357s, two 27-s and a 28-2 at the bottom. My 28-2 is really nice and all original. I got it this year.

Also refer to post #28 for my pair of 44 magnums. I think you will be able to appreciate them.

It is an extremely strong gun made out of the high tensile strength Carpenter 465 stainless.

Ive owned some 19-3 snubs that left the factory with butter smooth action. I'm also a fan of other early Smiths:66, 27, and 29. There is no revolver other than SMITH&WESSON as far as I'm concerned

Ruger six series 357. I own a k frame smith model 65 and a model 28 n frame, however the ruger six has the best balance of size and strength. Now if only it had the trigger of a k frame! But best all around, the speed six.

I have to fall in line with the Registered Magnum crowd and I would make it a 6" barrel. I Have handled only two in my life and the actions were the smoothness and cleanest breaking that I've ever felt.

If you replace the word "best" with "favorite" (it is all about preference, isn't it?) I'd say the Ruger Security Six. I love Ruger revolvers, I love the .357 magnum cartridge, and the Ruger Security Six is, IMHO, Ruger's magnum opus (no pun intended).

That's an intersting gun, Sgt127. I once had a chance to buy a 1930s Colt New Service 4" in .357 Magnum that was also issued to the Utah Highway Patrol. At the time it was the princely sum of $275.00 which I didn't have (early 70s).

Here's another vote for the pre-war S&W .357 Magnum but it need not be registered (they weren't all registered) or even a later version but with the small stocks and five-inch barrel. Second choice Model 29 four-inch barrels. I think those barrel lengths balance best in those different calibers. I've owned both but the pre-war S&W .357 Magnum was no in a collector condition but still everything was original and it worked just fine.

However, the Best revolver of all-time is bound to be something you don't own, or at least it always seems to be that way for me and I don't own either of those two above any more, nor the Colt New Service in .45 Colt. Among other revolvers I once owned and fondly remember was a S&W 65LS.

Ruger GP-100 mid 90s vintage. OTOH my current production 3 inch has excellent lockup and no ranging issues. My 4 inch from a couple years ago are not so tight. Never had a S&W that was as good.

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Single Action .45 Colt (Sometimes colloquially referred to by its alias as the .45 'Long' Colt or .45LC). Don't leave home without it.
