Reloading PRVI Partizan .223
Just received five hundred bullets of 62 grain Prvi Partizan bullets. What do you guys recommend my overall length should be?? I know not to go over 2.260, but I'm not sure what would be the most optimal.
Specifically these: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=154676282 Thanks Last edited by attila787; January 27, 2010 at 06:29 PM. |

What length (OAL) do your bullets measure?

M855 is 2.26" OAL.
I would set up me bullet seating die with my longer bullets at about 2.250 - 2.255". This keeps your rounds just below 2.26". Get them moving about 3050 FPS out of a 20" AR and 2900 out of a 16". Good link to info on military ammunition: http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/i...56mm_ammo.html |

Hammonje,
M855 has a steel penetrator the Prvi Partizan bullets attila787 bought have a lead core. Don’t think that matters as long as he works up his loads. That is a good link to info on military ammunition. .

No, because the mass is the same. What does it matter if it is steel or lead if it weighs the same. There could be differences in the density within portions of the bullets, for example where the steel is located in the SS109 projectile. I don't think it matters as far as accuracy is concerned. If it does it would be small. It has a steel penetrator in the nose, but the rest is lead. I have some Prvi Partizan SS109 ammunition with the non-penetrator core and it is excellent ammunition.
Velocity of PPU 62gr Ammo: 20" AR-15 2981 2973 3002 3051 2997 3013 2991 2969 2991 3039 AVG = 3002.5 FPS Just get them going up to M855 velocity (or rather a little bit lower). Little slower because 5.56 ammo is hot and we don't need to overwork our rifles. Right were I thought it should be. |

I have some Prvi Partizan SS109 bullets and wondered if there was a difference in bullet length between the lead core and the steel core?

Unless they leave a hollow space in the nose, there has to be a difference because steel is less dense than lead.
Hammonje, Do you have any of that ammo left so you can tell Attila what COL PP was using with the bullet? That would give him a starting point.

Unclenick
I thought the lead core bullets would be shorter. If someone could measure a lead core bullet I can measure a steel core and see what the difference is.

The OAL length of the PPU 62 gr ammunition is 2.215". Yes, I measured ten rounds and they all measured 2.215 +/- 0.003".
I know M855 projectiles are 0.906". You can measure the PPU 62 gr projectiles and compare. |
