Have now narrowed down the guns.

The nickel one is 1953 double action wide rib std trigger and hammer..
grips same serial number as the gun...sounds 99 1/2%

The Blued on is 1948...single action, target trigger and hammer...non original grips...has ring mark on wheel..owned and maintained by the smith at our shooting club....but still accurate.

They are both the same price as the nickel one would be better in a show case.........I think these were made to be used but cared for and I will be using lighter loads as it is for bullseye.

Some people have said that I would do better to get a newer 686 as they are better made than these would have been.

All my current guns are older and my Clarke colt 1911 is 1976 and that seems to shoot just fine....better than i can.

But I have never seen recent 50 yard target shot with a pre 14 k38.

Question about an antique .38

I have an old pistol that belonged to an uncle who passed away in 1971, I believe he had the gun for many years but I know nothing about it other than it's a Smith and Wesson .38, I can barely see 6 digits on the butt of the gun, can anyone help me identify?

S&W 38 Military & Police. It appears to be a pre war (WWII) model. Would need to see the serial number on the underside of the grip butt to give a closer date. The barrel appears to have been shortened also.

Can anyone tell me how many 625-8 V-Comps were made. My serial number is RVC01XX and has a lock.
My reference does not list that serial number range. You can call S&W customer service and they will give you the DOB over the phone for free.

Burra,
Jan 1983 starts with ABL4000 and Oct 1983 starts with ADE6700. So ACJ would be in that range.

That SN dates your gun to 1982 - the J-frames prior to 1997 were not rated by S&W for +P.

Hey guys, I found an old break-open revolver in my grandfather's desk after he passed away.

Serial umber on butt is unreadable, but I believe the number on the cylinder reads 405xxx, possibly 406xxx.

It is DA and if I had to guess I would say it's a .38 (I had some 9mm laying around and it loaded into the cylinder). Looks like a 6 1/2 inch barrel.

What is this thing and how old is it?

Thanks,
george

True Grit, it looks like a .38 double action 4th model.

The Serial number range is 322701-539000.

They were made from 1895-1909.

Since yours in in the middle of the serial number range, it was probably made around 1900-1905.

Price is probably around 100-150. There were quite a few made, and yours isn't in the best of condition.

S&W 357 Revolver

Friend is selling a S&W revolver. Not sure of the model but I am curious about the age of the gun. Serial is 9D326XX. Has a beautiful set of rosewood grips and is in almost perfect condition. Anyone willing to give me the age of this gun and what it sold for new?

9D326xx puts it in 1981. There are 7 different models made with the 9d #'s. With a model number, someone may be able to help you.

Jim L. just cleared up the date (1955) for my K-38 Combat Masterpiece, in another thread. This is one of only two revolvers I own. The other one is also a used S&W model - an M 60-7 (nickelplated) with a BSC 61** serial number. Since I want to determine if I can safely shoot +P's out of it, can anyone here find what the date is?

1994.
S&W began a heat treating package on model 60's starting in 1990 with the 60-7 which made them +P rated.
Your K-38 is nickel but your 60-7 is stainless steel.

Model 66 info

I purchased a used S&W Model 66 in 2001, serial # 9K22565. Just had it overhauled by Sandy Garrett of Northern VA Gun Works (his work is superb!) and boy does it work smoothly now. He said the gun had been fired a lot over the years!

Can anyone give me a year of birth or any other info based on the serial # - it does have a "pinned" barrel.

Thanks - J.P.

crasht51 - That SN would date your Model 66 to 1976, and it should be a "no dash." The pinned barrel and cylinder counterbore (which yours should also have) were dropped with the -2 in 1982. They were last manufactured in 2004.
