66-2, AJWxxxx

I have a 66-2 serial number AJW4XXX.

I have the Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd edition but do not see serial number 's prefixed with AJ or a range that would include AJ on page 400 of "All Other Revolver Models".

What am I getting wrong?

V498XXX would be the model number then
No, that is the serial number. Smith and Wessons did not have model numbers in WWII. It is a Military and Police .38 Hand Ejector.
The V prefix is said to have been added because they didn't want to run serial numbers up into the millions. "Victory Model" is a made up modern collector's term.

Can you please check on my year and possibly a price? Smith and Wesson model 29-4 serial number BCA 9xxx. I do have the original box and scope rings that come with it. Just trying to get more info as I inherited it when my grandfather passed.

Serial number dates it to 1989.
Price depends on condition, if original box and documents are with it and location.
As long as it’s not beat up it could range from $750 to over $1K retail.

S&W Model 581 Manufacture Date

I would greatly appreciate it if someone with access to the S&W Catalog could look up the manufacture date for my S&W Model 581 S/N AEN8XXX.

The upper side plate screw was eliminated in 1956 at around serial number 641000 with model number stamping beginning in 1957. So, that would put yours right in that 1956/57 window.

Here's what my "book" says about the serial number range. I interpret the "book" saying the S&W revolver in .32 was made between '62 and '69 and likely the later 1960s:

Approximate manufactured dates:
1950 1
1952 7369-21342
1953 28916
1955 55050-75000
1957 117770-125000
1962 295000
1969 786544

Supica, Jim,Nahas, Richard. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) (Kindle Locations 16936-16942). F+W Media. Kindle Edition.

Disregard this answer. I referenced info for the wrong S&W revolver(s).

I have the same book, 3rd edition, hard copy. Check page 128.
The serial numbers you posted are for the Chiefs Special in 38 spl. He has a 32 regulation police pre model number.

Post 8362,
Thanks for pointing out my error. Here's the "book's" info for a pre-Mod. 31 (I think):
1946-1960 postwar 536685-712953

S&W made several different models in 32 caliber, many sharing the same serial numbers.
Gonna need a lot more info or at least a picture.

It appears to be a 4th Model Top Break .32.

I'm sure those with an S&N book can find the date of mfg. (and correct me on the model if it's not a 4th Model).

Honestly, in that condition, it isn't going to be worth much (< $100) so don't over pay for it if you decide to buy it.

Pictures make all the difference! It’s a Safety Hammerless 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 170000 in 1909 to 242981 in 1937. The book does not break the serial numbers down any further but safe bet yours is pre 1920.

Books shows serial numbers running from 52637 in 1960 to 135465 in 1974. To narrow it down a little more: the flat latch thumbpiece ended in 1966, diamond grips ended in 1968 and the “M” prefix serial number started in 1969.

for Gonzalo4to,
I did not see the "TAW" prefix listed in my book, but here are the prefixes and associated years close to "TAW":

1984 – TAA, TAD, TAB
1985 – TAE, TAK
1986 – TAK, TAL, TAN, TAS, TAT
1987 – TAK, TAS, TAT, TAU, TBC, TBD, TBL
