Thanks Sevens!! I don't have the guns in front of me at work, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the diamond inserts.

They are desirable simply because Smith & Wesson discontinued them, but no big deal either way.

Just back from an estate sale....picked up a .32 Long revolver, 6 shot, DA. Butt says Ø6107 and frame/yoke says 44728. is nickel plated, and could use some TLC to the plating. Would someone mind giving me some insight as to what it is, and if $60 was a good price?

I just picked up one my Wife has asked about a couple of times. It's a 32 S&W Long in a 30-1 # H40xxx in nice shape with just some apparent holster wear on muzzle and cylinder front.

Anybody have an idea when it was made?

I'm confused by the leading zero on the number you report on the butt of the revolver. I'm no expert, but I don't see S&W punching up a leading zero, as if the revolver has a 4-digit serial number, but they elected to punch it up as 06107. I say, please look again at the butt of the revolver.

At this point, if it seems functional, not falling apart and the cylinder turns when cocked....

...without knowing ANYTHING else, if it's a Smith & Wesson, it is certainly worth the $60 you spent, and more.

1971, it appears.

Thanks Sevens. I have so few S&W's, and little chance of obtaining more anytime soon, that getting the book just doesn't make fiscal sense.

I wonder if the Library has a copy, I'm guessing they don't but I think I'll check.

Thanks again for the information.

If the budget strings are pulled so tightly that you fear damage to the fingers, I certainly understand. But please know that this book is far, FAR more valuable than looking up a few serial numbers. There's an almost irrational amount of quality, interesting detail in it and piles of pictures. You can open it up to almost any page and just read for pleasure.

My mouth waters at the hope & prospect of a new edition of this book!

That's another one that falls in to the H-U-G-E serial number range between the start of the 4th Change guns (1915) and the last of production before the Victory model. The table in the book only tells us that your revolver is near the very end of that, with 1941/42 being "likely."

Best way to know is the factory letter.
Second best way to know is to scour forum pages and auction/sale pages for a revolver with a similar serial number that does have a factory letter, and find out when it was shipped.

Sorry.

Smith & Wesson got goofy with the three letter prefix serial numbers and did many letters out of order. My best guess on the BCAxxx when I look at the table is that it's a late 1988 or an early 1989.

How about a date for what I believe is a Model 4? 76XXX is the S/N.

Please give more information. I don't recognize a "Model 4"

What's the caliber?
Describe the handgun?

caliber is a.32 S&W. The gun is a top break revolver, nickle plated with engraving.
Perhaps this old thread with pictures will help?
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=517253

I guess I should has stated it is a 4th model as opposed to a model 4. Not being a S&W guy, all I can say is "OOPS!"

That is extremely cool!
The 3rd post in that thread you linked by James K has all the answer that my book has. You'd need a S&W factory letter from Roy Jinks to glean more.

The factory letter will cost you $50 and will take 6-8 weeks to get. It'll give you a brief history on the model, it will tell you where it was originally shipped for sale and it'll tell you how the revolver left the factory, including the engraving.

Nice revolver!

Not a "Model 4" but rather a ".32 Double Action 4th Model"

That's not enough information for me to be sure of what you have, and that you describe it as a "round butt" muddys the water even more.

That serial number could fit in at least two different .38 cal models...
It could be a .38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model, the number putting it's manufacture somewhere in the 1910-1920 range. That would be a top-break revolver.

A picture or more information would help.

model 57 no dash

I just purchased a used model 57 blued 6 shot six inch .41 magnum revolver. The serial is n477xxx. Wondering when it was made and possible value. The bluing is probably 95+ percent and has a few handling marks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the cylinder serial#227057
Under the barrel serial#B 227057
On the crane Serial#5696

Stamped on the barrel, Smith&Wesson Springfield Mass USA
Patd March 22,96.May.21.95.

I think what you've got here is a .38 Hand Ejector Military & Police, Model of 1905, 3rd Change, and the number range of those revolvers ran to 241703 and ran from 1909 to 1915. It would be my guess that yours would be around 1914 or 1915?

The wood stocks on it now are not the original grips, those are far more modern.

This revolver evolved in to the Victory Model and eventually, the Model 10.
It is a K-frame, and the most produced single model of handgun... ever!

Nice one. Built in 1978 according to the book.

Value is wild animal, especially on a .41 Magnum. Definitely a less-traded Smith & Wesson revolver, and many dealers would look at it that way. They'd be less inclined to want to take it in as it might be more difficult to sell. However, that's a two-way street, as .41 Magnum fans simply KNOW they don't have a lot of guns to choose from, and they might pay a premium to get it.

So value would be generally difficult to assess, but if I have to take a wild stab in the dark given what I've seen at the many gun shows I've attended, I would imagine $800 is somewhere in the ballpark.

Running a number of searches on Gunbroker over a period of time is another way to get an idea of "value," and the closed & SOLD auctions are far more informative than the ones with crazy prices and zero bidders.

I happen to have a six-inch Model 66 with the AVBxxx serial number and ours are of the same production cycle, most likely 1987.

The table for serial numbers in that era is a little wacky with some numbers a bit out of order, but either very late '86 or early 1987 seems most likely.

Yours is in far, FAR better condition than is mine, I was able to get mine for a song because of it's condition, but it's a fantastic shooter and I'm thrilled to own it.
