Serial numbers ran from 57K0001 to 91K6800 that year. The other numbers are assembly numbers. Value depends on condition and barrel length. So, anywhere from $350 to $600. Jim |

.38 S&W
Gentlemen,
I just inherited an old S&W that belonged to my great grandfather, he was a Chicago cop in the teens through the 40's. It's nickel plated with mother-of-pearl grips. Serial number on the bottom is 3916XX. When I open the cylinder I find 18256 stamped in two places. It says .38 S&W Special CTG on the barrel. Any idea how old this actually is? Also would appreciate recommendations on where to send it for restoration. It hasn't been fired in many many years. It works as it should, but needs to be replated and gone through. Happy Holidays, Todd |

Since it is marked for the .38 Special cartridge it is most likely a K-frame Military & Police, Model of 1905, Fourth Change. These can be hard to date precisely as I know of no year-by-year s/n records. A reasonable estimate would be early to mid 1920s. According to SCSW S&W sold a number of these revolvers marked Texas State Prison from 1927-1930, scattered in the s/n range from 500000 to 630000. Quote:
My personal inclination is to leave family/heirloom guns as they are, taking pains to preserve the remaining condition. However you didn't ask about my preferences. If I wanted to have it checked out and renickeled I'd start by getting in touch with the S&W factory and see what they think. |

Thank you Dave, I really appreciate the information.
I've been struggling with whether to restore it, so your comments were very helpful. |

That said, I also had a 629-4 Classic DX with the same SN prefix (CCB). The target and fired casing with it were dated 1996. Jim |

Thank you, layton, do you happen to know the differences between your DX and my straight Classic, other than I gather there's a 1/2" difference in the barrels?

The story goes: when the classics were test fired any of them shooting a sub 1.5" 50 yard (or .75" 25 yard group) were seperated and labeled as DX's. They were shipped with 4 additional front sights of varying style, wood finger-grooved combat grips in addition to the standard Hogue rubber grips and the test target. Oh, and a $200 higher price tag.
They had the same barrel lengths as the classic: 5", 6.5" and 8.375". Jim |

Thanks again. I guess I got some bad info-- I thought the DX were 6" and the Classic were 6.5".

My dad just bought a M15-3 and would like the date of manufacture if you all wouldn't mind. Serial number on the bottom of the grip is 3K530xx which is also stamped on the frame under the yoke above the model number. Thank you in advance.

Stumped on model and year of S&W Revolver - Please Help
Hello All,
I am stumped on the model and year of this revolver. Inside the cylinder on the frame is stamped with a small 3 followed by a LARGE 3, below that has a number 45221. On the bottom of the grip frame on one side has the letter C and on the opposite side is a number 131094. It is a 38 S&W CTG Double Action Revolver, Fixed Sights, fluted barrel. Any help is appreciated. Thanks all. Last edited by lvhattierjr; December 22, 2011 at 02:17 AM. |

S&W used the "C" prefix on postwar fixed-sight revolvers made on the K-frame. S/N C131094 would date to from 1948-1951, most likely to 1949 or 1950. If this is what you have it would be a .38 S&W Special, not just .38 S&W which is a different cartridge. There would be no model number as these were not used until 1957. Not sure what you mean by a fluted barrel. A photo would really help. |

S&W Mod 60
This is a replacement for a Mod 60 stolen in 1980 that was used when I received it and would like to know when it was made. It came with wood cross hatch grips, one is chipped, rather than the black grips.
Ser. from butt 6576XX The barrel isn't 2" but 1 3/16" and has Smith & Wesson in smaller type on the left side and 38 S.&W. SPL. on the right side which is reversed from S&W pictures. |

For a model 60 the s/n quoted would date to 1968, possibly early 1969. Checkered wooden grips would be correct for the era. Those I've seen have the words Smith & Wesson on the left side of the barrel, the cartridge designation on the right. Never heard of a model 60 from the factory with a 1 3/16" barrel. Is it possible you are measuring from the frame? The barrel length should be measured from the cylinder face to the muzzle. |

Thanks Dave, as a newbe I did as you figured and only measured the barrel and not from the cylinder face. I guess it is worth sending to S&W for refurbishing.

DAVE, thank you so much for responding so quickly to help me discover the age and model of the pistol I have. The model 3 3 really confuses me. I have uploaded some pictures to help the identification. Thanks so much. Last edited by Glenn E. Meyer; November 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM. |

Smith and wesson revolver more pics.
Dave, I have included a few more pictures to help. Thanks again.
Also, a gun dealer made an offer at a recent gun show on what seemed like a low offer to me. Do you know where I might also be able to look for a value to this revolver? Thanks Its in about 92% condition Last edited by Glenn E. Meyer; November 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM. |

Nice clear photos, they helped a lot. They confirm it is a Military & Police model made around the time frame mentioned earlier (1948-1951). The numbers on the inside of the frame and yoke are assembly numbers. The serial number is the one on the butt of the grip, C 131094. You'll likely find it on the bottom of the barrel and on the rear surface of the cylinder as well. The sites I search when I want comparable sales are gunbroker, gunsamerica and gunsinternational. Sometimes I even find a gun I want! These are asking prices and not always what is paid but they serve as a guide and can at least serve to keep from making big mistakes. With a popular model such as this one you should be able to find some comparables. |
