Starting Charge - .45 ACP 230 Gr. Hornady HP-XTP?
I am loading .45 Auto. I have bought a box of Hornady 230 Grain HP-XTP and there is no recipe in the Hornady book for loading this one with Bullseye.
The book lists several powders that are fast burning powders and their associated starting charges (such as Titegroup @ 4.3 Gr., Unique @ 5.1) but I suspect that Bullseye is faster than either of these. The Hornady book lists the COAL for this bullet as 1.230". The bullet itself measures 0.640". This results in a seating depth of 0.308" with a case length of 0.898" (my cases are almost always around 0.888" in length for some reason so this would result in a seating depth of 0.298"). Would you more experienced loaders say that a starting charge of around 4.3 Gr. is appropriate or is that too small? Thanks, Mike Last edited by slice38; November 4, 2009 at 08:48 AM. I load 4.0 grains as my target load. I've loaded as little as 3.8 with no cycle problems.
