I have seen it done. At many events (historical reenactments, rendezvous, etc.) it has been prohibited.
Fun? Maybe. But the direction of flight and where it lands is not predictable. It can be a very dangerous undertaking.
BTW, one pound of black powder sounds grossly excessive. I would think much less would do the job.

They just had one in Laurel last month. BTW you can use up to two pounds of powder.

Two pounds?
I'm sure that would be a spectacle. And very expensive noise maker. That would be $30.00 $40.00 a bang.

Family Tradition

Our family has done this for years at Christmas, New Years and sometimes July 4th. We have never used that much powder for each explosion but we do have fun. We build a fire, use a long pole with a wire wrapped around the end to set off the black powder. One anvil is buried in the ground the powder is added to a hole in the top of the buried anvil, the other anvil is placed on top. The younger generations are always the most fun because they cannot believe this can be done.

A pound? I thought maybe 6 to 8 ounces would be generous.

I think they tape that much powder to their sledgehammers at the Mexican sledgehammer festival.

The good part starts at 1:30
