Thin 9mm

Looking at picking up a small thin 9mm. I think I am down to the Beretta Nano or the M&P Shield. What are your thoughts? Am I missing any (not interested in PF-9).

Hard to get thinner than a Walther PPS.

I currently have an HK P7 PSP in my waistband, and that pistol conceals amazingly well.

Either would be worth a look, but they cost more than the Shield or Nano.

Out of those two, I'd go with the Shield.

Overall, I suggest the Walther PPS is worth the extra money. In the very least, it is worth a hard look.

With the increased interest in concealed carry & the demand for compact semi auto pistols, there are a # of well made choices out there.
The Beretta Nano, the SIG P290 DAK or P239 SASII DAK, the M&P Shield, the Ruger LC9, the S-A EMP, the Kahr models, etc are all worth a look.

In a 9mm, I'd lean towards a P290 or P239 DAK with night sights. Many gunners like the new M&P Shield pistol. If you want a slightly larger pistol, the HK P2000sk LEM or a PX4 sub compact could do very well(and take the larger pistol mags as spares).

I like the Shield.

I wanted a PPS at one time, went to a dealer to buy one and tried all three he had in the case and the triggers were terrible. I think they are better now, but even if they are, I would go with the Shield.

I ran a Diamondback DB9 for a year. It's around 0.8" or so. I've heard mixed reviews from other owners, but mine worked very well. It will definitely take range time to get proficient with it though. The down side is nothing above 124gr, and nothing above standard pressure.

On my last 9mm buy my LGS clerk let me grip three sub compacts from their selection and even with small hands I did not like the feel of the Nano. It would have been my last pick.

I love my Ruger LC9. I have at least 1400 flawless rounds through mine. I can front pocket carry it with a pocket holster. I do use a Hogue grip sleeve on it but I would on any of the new small nines.

You are definitely missing Kahr. IMHO, the Kahr is the best small light CCW. They are thin, but do not add a lot of height to make them this.

Thin usually comes at the expense of bore axis being too high. Look at the Nano, Shield, etc. This is because to get enough locking lug area, they have to add surface area above and below the bore axis. Kahr must use metalurgy(costs money) to make this OK as mine shows no lug battering. . .

A Glock 19 isn't a bad compromise either.

pps and p7 beat all, but the p7 can get pricey. the pps is very reasonable when you can find them ($500-600). the kahrs are ok too. if you are really looking to save money, look at the pf-9 i'm selling in the link below. i would NEVER go with a stock pf-9, but mine is upgraded.

I've carried a PM9 for 5 years now. It works. Its small. I know you can compare these mini-9s forever but the only smaller 9mm is the Rohrbaugh and its the priciest of them all, you have to replace the recoil spring every 200 rounds, and they are hard to find.

Here are some OA lengths:

Rohrbaugh 5.2"
Kahr PM9 5.4
Sig 290 5.5
Diamondback 5.6
Beretta nano 5.63
Ruger LC9 5.97
Taurus 709 6.0
S&W Shield 6.1
PPS 6.3

As for width, they are all .8 - .95 and I don't see how you can tell the difference in .15"

The one area you might consider is weight. I find anything over 20 oz and my pocket sags. That's where the Rohrbaugh has an advantage at 15 oz. The PM9 and LC9 are both around 17 oz. The 290 is 21 oz and feels chunky to me.

I'd stick with the Kahr.
