That would be the serial number and would fit with 6984?4.
That dates it to late 1930's

I just inherited a near perfect condition Model 19-5...serial ->

AFD80xx

Could you let me know the manufacturer date? Where would be the best place to learn its value? gunbroker or somewhere else?

1984.
Define near perfect...
Just an estimate... In minty condition (no wear), $450. Add $50 if 2.5" barrel, another $50 if you have the original box, docs and tools.
Then, depending on location, luck and if someone wants it bad enough +/- another $50.

Thank you very much for letting me know Jim.

Not really sure what I mean by perfect...but it has no scratches, no blemishes on the blue'ing, etc.

Year of Manufacture

I just purchased a 19-3 in combat configuration with a 2.5" barrel and early style Pachymar grips. I would appreciate your help determining the year-of-manufacture.
SN# 12K 42XX
Many thanks if you can be of assistance!

SN's ran from 1 in 1878 to 97574 in 1892.
Book prices from 2006 show $400 in Excellent to $1200 As New.
6" or longer barrel adds a premium.

Assuming there is no letter prefix, that SN dates it to ~1920.
It would be a .38 M&P 4th Change which ran from 1915 to the end of WWII.
It went on to become the Model 10 when S&W starting assigning model numbers ~1957.

The latest edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson only covers serial numbers up to 2004.
JRE31XX is after that date.
You can call or email S&W and they will provide the date of manufacture for free.
