WTB Over/Under Combo 12G/30-06

IMHO, a .30-'06 in top break gun is not the best idea -- you might be happier with a rimmed rifle cartridge for more positive extraction.

'Tis true I might be better off. But for what I want it for, I need the higher caliber. There have been too many times I have been out in the back 40 and stumbled across a bear, close-up and personal, armed with my 30-06. The scope makes it hard to take am accurate shot at less than 20 yards. So I then opted to carry my 12 gauge with a 1 ounce slug. And wouldn't you know it, the pesky bear would be 50 to 100 yards out.

I just want one rifle that I can carry that will do a bit of mischief in either situation. So I am looking for something with knockdown power at both ends.

I have one of these Baikal combo guns in 12 guage over 7.62x39. It is a decent hunting gun. Since the above link is out of stock you might have to look around because since EAA stopped importing them and Remington took over (remington spartan line) that caliber configuration is not that common. Try checking www.gunbroker.com, from time to time I see them.

CZ 584 model 4. Mine is 12 ga. over 30-06. Extraction is not a problem. I am not sure if czusa is still importing them.

I bought it for a similar reason as the OP. During hunting season deer,sometimes bear, grouse, and quail are all in season. The combo gun was about all I could pack on a Honda trail 90. Occasionally I hunt out of a boat and carry it then. Otherwise it's sometimes in the pick-up "just in case"

Awesome. When I bought my baikal combo gun a few years back I was not aware that cz was offering one. I also wanted a 12guage/30-06 combo as it would be the same caliber as my other main hunting rifle and would be big enough for anything I would hunt. But as remington was taking over importing the Baikals and renaming them spartans, their price went up substantualy. So I could only find an original EAA Baikal in 12guage/7.62x39 and settled on it. The 7.62x39 is not what I wanted but it is similar in power to a 30-30 win so it works fine for deer. The gun itself is pretty accurate and works well and it is definitely a conversation peice. People always want to know what it is. I like the combo gun idea.

the Stevens over-under was in 12ga and 30-30. with the new LeveRevolution slugs that would do for anything in the continental USA with good placement. a Big Montana grizz may take a couple shots.

Not to be too ridiculous here - but we're presumably talking about a Black Bear, since you're in Oregon / so any kind of a lever or bolt action carbine chambered in 30-06 with open sights ought to be more gun than you would ever need / especially from 20 - 100 yards.

I hunted and killed a lot of Black Bear in western Montana over the years with 30-30's and 30-06's and almost all my kills were within 100 yards with open sights. I agree a scope is a liability on any terrain that is real brushy / or on any game within 100 yards if your eyes are ok.
