AR .22 vs .....

Guys,

I just wondering about all of the AR .22s I'm seeing everywhere. They look to be pretty expensive compared to a lot of other .22s and I am wondering about their performance. Target? Plinking? Hunting? For those who have bout one what purpose did you purchase it for? Are they as accurate as say the CZ 452?

Ballistically on par but harder to keep up with the CZ because of the milspec type trigger.

IMO you're better off to buy a Ruger 10/22 and take advantage of the unlimited aftermarket for it to build a "AR-style" or "tactical" .22lr. If you can dream it up they probably make it for the 10/22. They can be very accurate with the right barrel, stock, and trigger setup. Buying a receiver from Volquartsen to start a build is about the same price as the base level 10/22 carbine, so if you were going to replace most of the factory parts anyway, that might be the better option.

It won't be an AR, but anything other an AR-15 or AR-10 in the appropriate centerfire cartridge family isn't REALLY an AR either.

For a long time I did not like the 'tacticool' .22's but then I realized the adjustable stock lets the whole family shoot the gun...youngsters, gals, guys etc. so I grudgingly must give them their due.

Remington tricks out a 597 with a heavy barrel in the tactical furniture and I saw one last fall for $350. That's still a lot of cash for a .22 but it felt really solid, much more so than the Mossberg or even the S&W they had at the time.

Like everyone else has said though, it is hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 especially if you're willing to customize it yourself.

I had and sold a S&W M&P 15-22. It was one hell of a shooting little rifle. I really enjoyed it but disliked the handguards. They can be changed but it was more work than I wanted to do, so I sold it to a buddy and bought a CMMG Quebec-A. It is a standard AR lower and a CMMG .22 cal upper. It shoots as good as the S&W , but weighs a tad bit more.

These guys aren't telling you lies, you can get a 10-22 for a lot less. It just wasn't an option for me. I didn't care for the 10-22's. I actually wanted the AR to keep the muscle memory,etc for my other caliber AR's. The 10-22's are awesome rifles, you just have to decide if an AR style is worth the extra $. I ended buying another AR in .22. It is well worth the difference to me, but to many it isn't.
