It's a simple question: .357 Mag or .357 Sig?

In a 4" or shorter barrel with 124/125 gr bullets 9mm +p. The other 2 will have less than 100 fps velocity advantage. In a longer barrel and heavier bullets 357 mag.

I have .357 Magnum revolvers, semi autos and single shots, plus a Marlin lever gun.

I have no use for a .357 SIG.

I have 357 Sig. Both will get the job done, I would trust either cartrage as as much as any hangun cartridge. Think the question is semi or revolver.

What's the intended purpose?

For personal defense, the Sig offers similar performance with 125 gr. projectiles and much higher capacity.

For outdoor or hunting applications, the 357 magnum can be significantly more powerful and launch heavier bullets.

.357 Mag....all the way ! I have no use for a .357 Sig either.

I have about a dozen S&W K, L & N frame revolvers in 2 1/2" , 2 5/8" , 4" , 5" and 6" barrels / a 4 3/4" Freedom Arms single action revolver / and a Henry Big Boy rifle...all in .357 Mag....

.357 Mag is a very versatile caliber.....I consider it a great option for concealed carry, personal defense, a bedside table gun, even a hunting caliber...and fun to "plink" with....

.357 Sig to me is an "in between" caliber...that I have no use for...

But tell us why you're asking.... ??

This may seem like a harmless question, but it cost me a lot of money a few years back. I had to go out and buy a 4" GP-100 and a P226.

Does the 357 Sig match the 357 Mag? If the 357 Mag is coming from a 4" revolver, yes. And this nonsense about 9mm +++ is just that. The number you're "shooting" for is 1,430 fps with a 124/125 JHP. So, for a defensive pistol that will be carried, more rounds wins. Advantage 357 Sig.

Go to 147s, however, and the Sig is barely keeping up with 158s from the Mag. Longer barrel on the revolver? No contest. Cast 180s? Fuhgetaboutit. Advantage 357 Mag.

Just get both. Or get a 10 mm, which beats both handily. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

For hiking, I'd prefer one of my 8-shot 357 Mags.

I sometimes carry 357 Sig. Can't argue with 15+1, or twice the capacity of my 8-shot revolvers. The drawback with 357 Sig is that it is expensive to practice with.

I like Onward Allusion's post. As I stated before they are different guns and are kind of ridiculous to compare.

I was able to buy both a Sig Sauer P226 and a P229 in .40 S& W at very low prices ($300.00 + or - $25.00 each) a couple of years ago. Simply buying a .357 Sig barrel for each, I now have the essence of 4 pistols by simply changing out the barrels which takes seconds.

I love my .357 Magnum S&W Revolvers and have 5 of them (Models 66, 19, 686, 27 & 28).

Like Onward Allusion and some others, I do not compare the two rounds or the guns that shoot them.

A 9mm can do that but pressures are very high and not safe in most guns.

Highly unlikely you'd find .357 Sig ammo in small places. .357 Mag is everywhere.

357 S&W Magnum for me, it's a handloaders dream cartridge.

I would shoot .40 before I shot 357 Sig.

The "basis of comparison" being that the 357 Sig has been touted from the beginning as a semi-auto equivalent to the 125 gr. 357 Magnum.

.357MAG revolvers. Great medium-bore cartridge that allows a good range of bullet weights and loads for various tasks and circumstances. Much more versatile than the 357SIG in a pistol.

Pistol? Dedicated defensive weapon (but not for medium-sized dangerous or feral game)? 9, .40 or .45ACP.

Although I'm not particularly interested in "conversions" for dedicated carry weapons, I once came close to picking up a factory G33 barrel to use in my G27 (after having confirmed with the factory rep of that time that the serial number of my G27 permitted the use of the G33 barrel), but changed my mind. He told me I had to use G33 mags if I wanted optimal reliability, and combined with the higher cost of the ammo, adding a bunch of G33 mags didn't appeal to me.

The caliber simply doesn't interest me, and as an armorer trained by some of the different gun companies who make 357 pistols, I've been told that it's harder on guns than even the .40 S&W. As a firearms instructor I tended to shoot my guns quite a lot.

While the 357SIG appears to be seeing some declining use in the LE field, that doesn't mean private owners can't continue to enjoy it, though.

Like you stated in your OP, it's a preference thing.

If you like it, enjoy. If you don't, enjoy what you do like. No biggie either way.
