Any love for the S&W SD9 (or SD9VE)?
I'm pretty happy with my SD9 in flat dark earth, installed an extended takedown lever, and the Apex Tactical trigger springs with the stock trigger, and she just flat out runs flawlessly. But I rarely see the SD9's mentioned, so thought I'd see what others experiences with them have been.

I'm happy with mine. Doesn't seem very picky about loads, feeding and firing everything I've tried well. I consider it a very good choice among the low cost offerings.

I think they don't get mentioned much because they are just a good reliable entry priced gun with few issues. Most of us who got them simply wanted a good weapon that didn't have issues. Mine has never had any issues and it is bone stock. Most guns you read about have had modifications due to issues or the desire to make them "different".

No love but do like it, bought a used SD9VE for a plinker and home defense . Have fired several hundred rounds with no issues, being light weight seems more accurate with 124 gr ammo . Only upgrade is a wide body takedown plate , Iprotec light and maybe a shoulder holster for cool weather carry.

Had one, an SD9 VE, sold because of the heavy trigger, the gun’s only real flaw in my opinion.
Was scared to mess with factory striker spring due to reliability concerns. Having since had an Apex DCAE kit installed in my M & P, without issues, I now realize I made a mistake ditching the SD9. One of many money-wasting errors over the years of feeding my gun habit. The buddy I sold it to is happy with it, travels with it all the time. |

I've had one or two VE's for several years and am very pleased with this gun. One lives in a drawer by the bed and the other is my carry weapon. Also have the SD40. My wife likes it too but would like something a bit smaller hence my earlier question about the SCCY product line that still hasn't been purchased. It's an entry level item but one that should serve many needs.

I have an SW40VE ive had for probably 6 years or so and while it is not a tack driver for me it's probably seen every bit of 2000-3000 rounds with basic FMJ ammo and its never had one problem.

I would rate it much better than other bargain priced pistols in it's price range
mfg by a big name arms maker I would buy a S&W SD9VE , it's a S&W version of a GLOCK for less money |

I had the 40 caliber version. It was completely reliable. The trigger was so bad that I couldn't shoot it very well. I eventually traded it towards a 40 caliber pistol with a better trigger (1911). If you want a reliable pistol for cheap and don't mind the stiff trigger, it's for you.

I've been finding/buying mags for mine on gunbroker for around $20 each including shipping.

I remember messaging back and forth with Apex Tactical when they released their line of barrels for the M&P. Somehow the topic of the SD9 came up. According to Randy Lee the lockup is different enough than the M&P and that the SD9 actually would shoot better groups than Gen 1 M&Ps. Of course you had to get over the trigger to get that accuracy, but mechanically they were tighter shooting guns.

My Sigmas have been remarkably accurate at longer than normal ranges, past 25 yards they shoot the pants of my Glocks. I actually like the triggers on them better than the Glock.

I have four of the SD9VE and I am not a fan of the 9.....go figure.
Good shooters, all of them. They will function with anything I put thru them. I have one that is dedicated to cast bullets. I had to finagle around to get them to function, but after I got the bugs worked out of the bullets (not the gun), they are remarkable. I never leave home without one. NEVER. For an SD gun, I like the triggers as is. |

I have the 40. Installed the lighter trigger spring that a guy online sells. Accuracy is excellent. Shoots POA out to 25 yards. Reliability/ dependability has been great, except for a box of Winchester white box, 165 grain JHP's. Didn't like those. But everything else, Hornady American Gunner, Remington, Fiocchi, and various Eastern bloc manufacturers have all run 100%.

I have two of them. The first I put an apex trigger kit in and it's been flawless after ~1000 rounds fired. Every bit as reliable as my Glocks but $ hundreds less

I had one, but ended up selling it off. I couldn't get past the failure to eject issues that I was having. I had another member of my pistol club give me a few pointers, and he seems to think that the FTE was a result of my grip; he said I was probably limp wristing it. I had similar issues with the few Glocks that I have shot.
After I sold it, I bought Shield 9mm and couldn't be happier. I have close to 3K rounds through the Shield and the only issue I encountered with it was 100% operator malfunction. Exco

I've owned several over the years .. Seems like I trade them off ... But I do like'em ... The trigger is a bit heavy .. But its marketed as a self defense sidearm... Right now they have a $25.00 rebate

I really like the gun! I had the old sigma, than the SD9VE and now the SD9 with fiber optics, it's the best of the three.
The latest has the best trigger and they've all been reliable and accurate SD Sights.jpeg SD9.jpeg |

I had an SW40VE, the SD's predecessor. It was a great gun especially for the price. Felt like I needed a G22 and sold it. Trigger was heavy but it was accurate.
All the Best, D. White

I heard they are very good expect for their trigger. I was debating one vs a Ruger Sr9c as a bob dedication or desk gun. Kygun had them for $217 after rebate July 4th special... I missed it though well I'm going get a Sr9c anyways, about $307, I heard the trigger is better. A friend has the 40 cal model and loves his.

I had a SD9VE. Put some fancy Tru-glo fiber optic sights on it and had the apex trigger kit for a bit. I took the trigger kit off and found that the grittyness had smoothed out and the gun was still quite accurate. Performed better in my hands than a Sig SP2022 that I owned briefly.
Gave it to my sister a few years ago when she was having ex husband problems. She never needed it but I told her to keep it and keep practicing with it. I do miss it like crazy, was my first full sized handgun. |
