Savage Model MARK II
Hey,
My soon to be 14-year old brother enjoys shooting. He's gone on outings with me and with our family, so I thought for Christmas I'd get him a bolt-action .22lr as a first rifle. I was looking at the Savage Model Mark II. Does anyone have experience with these rifles? Have you been pleased with its performance and reliability? Here's the model I'm looking at: http://www.savagearms.com/rimfire/ma.../mark11fxp.htm Thanks,

Thanks. Would I just be better off getting him the model without scope, and just getting him a nicer scope separately, then?

Make him learn the open sights first(if it has em, I don't know that model's stats). Then explain the purpose/workings of a scope, and give him a budget and let him pick one out. More learnin goin on that way ya know? Plus its fun pawing at different models and such.

That's an excellent idea, brembo.
I just talked to my brother about which model of the rifle he'd like, and he wants the MarkII-FSS; the synthetic/stainless version with open sights. I attached a pic of the rifle. I think it'll be a really nice rifle for him to start off with. Thanks for the info,

Er, I thought that I posted a pic. Let's give this one another try.

That would be a great gun.I got a left hand bolt for my ex-fiance and its real nice.I agree with learning the stock sites and then getting a scope. The Savage has my least favorite iron sites and i think he'd be fine with a $20-$30 scope.Spending more on the scope than the gun costs is pointless in .22lr in my opinion.Mine is wearing a $15 Tasco and its fine.
