Remington 700 ADL or SPS?

Just picked up a Remington 700, the box says ADL but my father in law says SPS... any way to tell the difference between the two?

The sps will have a floor plate to unload the rifle. The adl will have a blind box magazine where the shells have to be cycled to unload. On the newer version adl's the stock looks like the black sps stock minus the floor plate.

Right on. No floor plate. The stock is what confused me. Thanks

Remington discontinued the ADL and replaced it with the SPS. For unknown reasons they decided to bring back the ADL. I don't think they even show it in the catalog or website now, but they are selling them, at least in some stores. Makes it confusing to keep up with.

Personally, I'd prefer the ADL anyway.

The ADL is still out there because the 770 is a piece of (do-do).

I'm not sure that Remington still manufactures the ADL - Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse both sell the ADL (possibly left-overs?). Most salesmen will tell you that it's superior to the 770.

I'm not an expert - but I think the lineage looks something like this:

770
ADL
BDL
SPS
CDL

(with a few other models in-between)

700 & 770 look similar.
easy tell though (on most but not on all models) is the stock. SPS has a smooth stock, the 770 looks like it has some sort of ergonomic fingergrooves under the barrel. Don't know why, but they kinda make it look cheap.

the 770 also looks like it's taller, like there's more slope and more empty space in the stock.

700 (SPS model)

note the sturdier bolt, breech, and stock.
Standard: drilled/tapped for scopes
Usually fitted with a 24" barrel, though it is not at all uncommon for it to have a shorter tactical barrel, or a longer 26" barrel depending on caliber.
has either a hinged floor plate magazine (shown) or a detachable box magazine (looks sort of similar...)

All the pics I've seen of the ADL it has checkered pannels on the stock, and some sort of rudimentary ironsights on the barrel. Also for some reason there is no floor plate on the rifle to unload rounds.

770:

comes with a rail for optics (Might be fun for S&G to slap an EoTech or ACOG on it and try to use it for a scout gun)
Usually comes with a cheap scope mounted on it.
Has some weird finger grooves on it. Still don't know why. I think they make it go faster or something.
Taller than the 700.
feels hollow when you pick it up.

Remington still manufactures the ADL mostly as special runs for big box stores like Dicks, Wal-Mart, Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc.

The easiest way to tell the 700 from the POS 770 is the oval ejection port on the 770..............
