I use Win Large Rifle primers for everything its what the gander near me carries most of the time works in my SKS and AR-10. they are good enough for who they are for. How about what kind of brass does everyone use. I have a ton of Winchester and fiocchi haven't really got to play with this UP Michigan weather.

Buy them, probably cheaper

I don't reload for this caliber yet. I find that when Cheaper Than Dirt or Sportsman's Guide runs specials, I can usually pick up a couple thousand rounds for under $.20 a piece. For rocking and rolling, that's cheaper to me than my time to reload that many.

Kdog, I know what you mean, this winter just keeps dragging on. I'm in Marquette too and can't wait for the weather to break.

Sportsman's Guide

Try the following link, only $.22 per round. $.21 if you are a club member. This is their regular pricing, about twice a year they will run specials and the price will drop below the $.20 barrier. They have fmj, hp and now sp in the wolf ammo. All are around the same price and if you join the club, the price drops a couple cents per round and depending on how many you order, you could get your membership for free because of the savings.

I have never had problems with them.

I've used the CCI 200s and CCI 250s. Couldn't really tell the difference. When those run out, I'll be going to the Wolf LR magnum primers.

123 gr. 7.62 X 39

I just got a box of 500 Hornady's (soft points) from Midway for around $100.00. Couldn't find any in the other places I looked and they were backordered at Midway.

They're pretty good at notifying you when stuff comes in if you use their "Remind me" thingie.

I been playing with .308 bullet diameter in the gun for a while with so so results. But my favorite load is with the Hornady V-max you catch them at grafs every now then. I am not going for super accuracy with open sights on an yugo SKS but I been able to dial them down enough to surprise me.

There are no spring-loaded firing pin in my AK or SKS rifles...

So I use nothing but CCI #34 primers.

Powder? AA1680 is wonderful, better than H335 or IMR4198, at least according to my own trials thereof.

I handload all my 7.62x39, and have been doing so since about 1997. I like the consistency, and the boost in accuracy over the steel-cased crap.

It's no big deal for me to fire up the Dillon 550 and crank out a couple hundred rounds. Looking at the costs/availability of 7.62x39 ammo here in 2009, I feel more than justified in doing so.

When it comes to bullets, I tried the Golden West Brand bullets. Not much better then some of the mil surps I've tried. The Hornady V-Max shows promise. Just one trial on both bullets. I need to test more. You can see it here: http://www.pixagogo.com/4825444121 Click on a pic to make it bigger, then click on original at the top to blow it up.

I have been loading up surplus tracers (m-62) and loading with aa-1680, for primers it depends on the case. Remington cases use the small rifle primer and i load with the cheapest i can get, cci 200 for the case that take the large rifle primer. I know the bore on most AK's in .311 but i have not noticed any difference in accuracy using the .308 diameter bullets and with the tracers going for 80.00 for a thousand it is the best buy. Plus they are a blast to shoot!

Tkcomer, about those pictures...

In photo #6, all I could think was, "Cat, meet muzzle blast!"

Bummer about the accuracy in that AR. I would've expected better from that platform, and I can routinely go sub 2" at 100 yards with my Bulgarian SLR-95 and handloads. I haven't gone past 28.0gr of AA1680, though.

The pic with the cat in it was after the wife fired the gun. It just raised it's ears up and sat there. It never runs off when I'm out shooting. The rest just scatter. I'm using Hornady data for the V-Max and the GWB bullets. They show a max of 23.9grs on AA 1680 for the 123gr bullets. Sierra goes to 24.6 with their .311 125gr SPT bullets. Not sure what direction I want to go when I test again. So far, the gun lights off anything I stick in it. Though I do have the MGI bolt and firing pin in it. And I've not had any doubles from not using mil spec primers.

I have a few questions:

1) With round components apparently in the 20-25 cents range, and a prospect of surplus ammo prices dropping over the next year possibly, is it worth investing in?

2) Which brass yields the most reloads? How many do you typically find yourself getting?

3) Not taking initial investment into account, what are you finding yourself paying per self-manufactured round?

4) If I were to get into lead casting, are there feed issues with purely lead loads?

This is the only rifle round I have, and want to get into reloading, and the main thing keeping me away from a turret system is this round. But if the cost benefit isn't normally there for this round, I guess that I have 1 less reason to lean towards a single step press.

See PDShooter's cast bullets above?

They're running copper gas checks, which is a Good Thing (TM) to have in a gas-operated autoloading rifle.

I noticed that. I don't know anything about it yet. I've only reloaded shotgun shells so far. Is that like a copper skeleton?

the GC prevents the base of the bullet from being melted by the burning gas and gas blow-by which leads to leading.
I haven't tried the cast slugs - I'm thinking of the GW slugs though.

GC are the little copper cups you see on the base of the bullets pictured. I use Lapua and Winchester cases.CCI #34 primers mainly to protect agents slamfires in my SKS rifles. My powders of choice are Reloader #7,AA-1680 and IMR or H-4198 in that order. I work up loads with all these powders and many different bullet types in .310 and .311 from 123 gr. all the way up to 187 gr. in FMJ,SP and cast bullets.

I like to be able to have available ammo for my rifles regardless of what components are or may be available at any given time, although my current stockpile of components will last me many many years to come. My current reloads run me just a little over $4/20 with the American mfg. bullets. I have a batch of .308 30-30 150 gr. FN bullets I have loaded and ready to test out just waiting on the weather to clear up to see how they will do.

GC Lee bullets.

Several of my different reloads
