Looking to build a .308 Mauser

Just picked up a Mauser 98 receiver. Has BNZ 43 and has nazi proofs on it. Looking for ideas about triggers, barrels, stocks, bolts.

My ideas so far:

Barrel - no idea but want match grade and .308
Trigger - timney
Stock - Boyds Thumbhole VT
Bolt - No idea
Sights - Williams

Any other ideas?

With Nazi proofs(if they're legit)it might be better to spend the bucks restoring it. For a barrel if money's no object I'd go with Krieger. They have shallow rifling which gives better accuracy but the trade off is they don't last as long. You can pick up a bolt and sights at Numrich www.e-gunparts.com
Why a match grade barrel and no scope? Kinda defeats the purpose.

Money is and isn't an object. I dont want to get crap stuff but i also don't want to spend $2000. Right now i have VZ-24 Brno 8mm thats my fathers. Everything is newer (late 50's -60's) Very nice gun. It has the williams peep on it and I have been hitting some decent shots at around 330yards with cheep romainian ammo.

I would like to go with a match just so i don't have to limit myself sight wise, in case i want to add a scope later

Really though everything is up in the air. Not to interestd in doing a restore though. If i bought it all together and fixed it up possibly but just buying the receiver id rather turn it into something else.

Im still tossing ideas around on what i want to do with it. So far i have the complete receiver (not sure what to do about the bolt though)and just ordered a boyds thumb hole stock.

How are the Parker Hale barrels? Found a "PARKER HALE HEAVY BARREL 308 WIN. TARGET BARREL" that im looking at.

Im not really sure about the cheaper barrels though. Like an $80 vs. a $200 something barrel

The rifle may have enough value to the right person to pay for most of your project on an action that is not WWII marked. Just a thought.

You are set up to do all this yourself, right?

Paying a reputable gunsmith to turn a stripped receiver into a working rifle would cost more than quite a nice new gun.

Oh, OK, I thought your OP meant it did not have a bolt. At least you have a complete action to work with. Comment still applies; making a military Mauser into a sporting rifle is about as bad a money sink as a boat unless you can do the work yourself.

This was an 800.00 build quite a number of years ago on an F.N. 98 made in 51 but it does have an Obermeyer barrel. Needs a reblue now.

I have seen mauser actions on Gunbroker that advertise about kimber? They look brand new and everything, but i still like the idea of the old markings / proofs and the fact that its my own and not store bought. I have plenty of those already. I know going into this that i will never be able to get even half the money back from this build, if i ever get tired of the gun, or fall on hard times.
I have no tools for doing this myself.

I was talking to a couple gunsmiths, one said its absolutely no problem and he can make it however i want and accurate as hell, the other gunsmith (very / extreamly reputable) said it will run over $1500 but it can be done.

I'm guessing but I think yours is a "late" Mauser. I think you'd be better off to give Douglass bbls. a call at Charleston Wva. and get them to fit one of their excellent no. 3 contour 8X57 JS bbls. to it. Load it to European standards and it's a nice "medium bore." They will also check the action for "set-back" and all.

I already have an 8mm. Looking to get away from that and get a more common and cheaper round. i know 8mm are cheap but im tired of shooting corosive and the regular stuff is expensive.

I just picked up 23 boxes of .308, 150 gr Remington core-lokt for less then $10 a box.

Looking at the Remington 798. Putting the stock i just bought on that. Either get the whole gun for $430 + s/h or just the barreled action from MidwayUSA for $399 +s/h.

I understnd - I get sick of certain calibers too, or, just want a change.
By the way, that Rem. 798 is the old Mark 10 Mauser action made in cz. They were sold by several companies and are good actions! However, I really like the lo-swing safeties rather than the action mounted triggers, and safeties - I even like a smooth military trogger!

The 308 is a great cartridge, I've got a "target" chamber reamer for it and have made a few in my time.
It suprises me Remington went to that action - it shows that the 98 Mauser was and is the best action on earth.
The 700, after you tear one down doesn't have the inherent strength of the Mauser. That "three ring of steel" is a crock - if a case head expands and goes you've got a junk action - with the 98 it just might vent out and not damage the action ring.
The Turk 38 Mauser is a good one - I've built 9.3X62 and 9.3X64 and 416 Taylors on them - good actions, hard where they need to be!

Your rifle is marked bnz 43 meaning it was made by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, A.G.
in Austria in 1943 fwiw. Have fun with your project.

The Parker-Hale barrels were so-so, but for $80 you can hardly go wrong since you are talking about putting iron sights on it.

You might try E R Shaw barrels. They are not match quality, but are very good barrels and very reasonably priced. You can even buy a short-reamed barrel in 308, or just send them your action to do the barreling work. Their prices are very competitive.

The Parker Hale barrel I used shoots my handloads into a 1.5 inch five shot groop at 200 yards. 168 gr HPBT, Rem Brass, 44 grains of IMR 4064, BR-2 primers (work up accordingly).

Altho guys who shoot past 600 don't have much luck with the 168 grain bullets as the slow twist in the PH barrel doesn't keep them stabilized past those ranges. I've been meaning to work up a 155 grain Palma load, one of these years.

So this is just bugging me on not know what i wan to do. So far i have bought the receiver, stock, and barrel. Now i see Remington has a $30 rebate till Dec sometime. So now im tossing around the idea of buying one of those NIB off of Gunbroker for $459. Shipped to my FFL plus the rebate will come out to $475. Then i noticed i can unload the stock off of it on Gunbroker for $170ish. So that would bring it down to $305. About $95 cheaper then buying just the barreled receiver off of Midway USA not including shipping and FFL

Why are there so many god damn choices!!!!
