legal or not?
Ok, first I'm a noob so be gentle. Building my first ar15 (rifle not pistol) and I bought what was supposed to be a 16" barrel (private sale), but when it arrived it was a 10" barrel with a 6" flash suppressor! So, 2 questions;
1. Is this make it a legal (16") barrel? 2. Second, I measured the barrel from the rear of the delta ring to barrel end, and it actually measured 15 3/4". Did I measure this correctly? |

1) if the flash suppressor is permanently attached (welded for sure, possibly certain kinds of staked/pinned, I'm not sure on that) it is legally 16"
2)the measurement is from the breach face (bolt). From a ballistics perspective (energy) its a 10" barrel though. I'd be most upset that the actual "barrel" wasn't the 16" I paid for, assuming it was t your screw up for ordering the wrong thing. Last edited by Brian Pfleuger; June 14, 2013 at 11:52 AM. |

I would never buy a barrel unless I saw it first or received some sort of picture. I know that would not tell you how worn the inside was but it would have been a red flag to you about the lenght.

if possible, return it and buy a regular 16" heavy barrel with 1-7 or 1-9 twist.

Midway has a heavy 16" Model 1 (Shaw barrel) for $150. I built a rifle with one and it is a tack driver.

I have a barrel like you described on mine for years. Look on the flash suppressor for a small silver dot about 1/16 big down where the barrel starts. This is silver solder or braze and is legal. There were hundreds of these barrels produced and I believe they are still available through "The Gun Parts Corporation".

I've never understood the point of getting 10" barrel and tacking the fake can on there.
If you don't want to pony up for the SBR or get the pistol then just stick with the 16" barrel. You have all that length with none of the benefits. |
