USPSA/IDPA 9mm Question

A question for those with some IDPA/USPSA experience.

This has probably been asked a thousand times....but;
If you wanted to shoot the same 9mm in IDPA SSP and USPSA Production, and wanted the pistol to cost less that $650, which gun would you choose?

I would get a get a M&P, M&PL or Pro. There is always the Glock 34 too. Smith has been running a special for two free mags with the purchase of a M&P. That would give you 4 magzines and you would just need 1 or 2 more magazines and would still keep you well under $650. You would be right on the edge of $650 with a good Comp-Tac or Blade Tech holster and, some mag pouches. I prefer the M&P because, now it is cheaper than a Glock, has 3 sizes of grips, good sights, steel guide rod and (IMO) feels and points better. If you get the glock you may want to change the sights. I have shot in IDPA and USPSA and the Glock and M&P performed flawless.

You will 4 to 5 magazines for USPSA and, 3 magazines for IDPA.

Get a CZ-they come in various sizes and configurations. Best value for the money going today!!! You'll love the way they fit in your hand.

I got an XD9SC a couple years ago for less than $500 and really nice used CZ75B for a lot less last year. Both are good shooters, accurate and reliable.

My XD, the gear and 6 mags cost $700-750 total. With $650.00 any brand gun, holsters, etc., should give you a good set up. Remember, IDPA is a little cheaper because you need three mags, compared to at least five for USPSA. You also fire less rounds in an IDPA match.

For IDPA, the XD is classified as an Enhanced Service Pistol for some damn reason.

Your mileage may vary, but I'd get a Glock 34 or a Glock 17. Either that or a Beretta 92FS.

Hmmm...I'm sitting here, looking at my list, knowing what I know now.
I'd have to pick either the Glock first (even though I won one once I wouldn't, because they don't fit my hand, but it may fit yours) due to its overall goodness-as-gun, and the availability of EVERYTHING for it, or the S&W M&P or SA XD.
Whichever fit my hands best.

That said, I own three CZ clones.....

I have run tons of ammo through my pt92 and no problems. Good shooting weapon and reasonably priced. Accurate and reliable. goes bang every time.

I know I know:barf:

But it works hard for me.

I started out with a Baretta 92. The gun itself was reliable but the mags sucked. Went through many...no satisfying results.

Switched to a G34 and swapped for a SS guide rod and fixed sites [both cheap]. No errors what so ever. Shoots fast, smooth and accurate. Used ones are available.

While an excellent firearm the XD's I have tested felt a bit rough.

I say Glock 17, don't waste the money on the 34 if you go Glock.

Glocks are cheap, abundant, parts are cheap, tons of different gear to chose from, magazines are cheaper then most others, as well as almost any aftermarket part you might buy down the road.

Don't get an XD as previously mentioned it's not SSP legal due to it's classification as single action or some garbage.

I have shot USPSA with a cz85 combat, which cost about $500. It is super reliable, grips well with houge wrap arounds, and is very accurate. Downside is that it has a pretty rough trigger out of the box. The 85 has the ambi saftey, adjustable sights and drop free mags. I'm a lefty so it was the cz for me. I'd go to a gun store and ask if you can compare the feel of a glock, M&P, cz and Xd before making your choice. I'd also ask to try the triggers.

Caution: S&W has not yet made 2000 each of Plastic M&P Pro or 9L to qualify for USPSA Production. (USPSA considers them separate models so they must make 2000 EACH to get in.) Getting close, so your purchase might push it over the line, but if not it could be a while before you could enter it in a sanctioned match.

Having shot both the Glock 17 and the G19 in IPSC and IDPA, I find the G19 is quicker out of the holster, fits my hand better, moves laterally much quicker. Accuracy the same. It stops better, the weight is about the same, that extra length seems to be the deciding factor, the G34 even more so.

This is a personal feeling, the top shots in both use the G34.

I shoot my M&P9 in USPSA Production class and I really like it. Of course there are lots of Blocks out there, and if that's your cup of tea, go for it they're good pistols. If I had to choose something other than my M&P to shoot Production I'd go G17 or CZ SP01. I'm not a fan of the XD's

FYI, the M&P Pro has now had the 2k unit requirement for IPSC Production met, so if you want to run the new longslide M&Ps they're legal.

I went with an XD Tactical myself.

Without question I would shoot the G34.

Second choice would be a G17.

Heck I ran a G21 for years in IPSC and it was excellent. In fact it would be my top choice today in L10 class.

I want to ask this... I never see ANYONE say that they suggest a Sig P228,P229 or any other Sig for USPSA? I just bought a Sig P229 9mm and was thinking about going to a couple shoots here where I live, and I have been looking aroud, and no one ever says anything about the Sigs. Are they not good for IDPA/USPSA matches? Just curious, I alsohave a Glock 23 I was thinking about using.

My Sig p229 is a great shooting pistol, I cant miss even at 30-40 yards. My wife shoots a Sig P239, and I think that might even be a good USPSA gun for her to use at a match? Comments?

If you can't miss, then it is a good gun FOR YOU. Have at it, there is no rule against the P-guns.

Your wife will have to do some extra reloading but hers will do well enough, too.

So would it be in the best interest for her to purchase the 10 round mags for the P239? I just asked about the Sigs, cause I never see anyone saying anything about them in Comp shooting. I think the P229R is a awesome gun and it has a great trigger. Does anyone at all shoot or ever shot one in USPSA?

I don't know how far the 10 round P239 magazines protrude. IDPA and USPSA Production guns must fit in a box of specified dimensions.

I shot a P226 CPO with GGI tuneup for a while.

Yeah I would have to see what the Dims are with the 10 round. I have one more for you... The P239 mag is considered a 8 round single stack, would that mean that I could shot that pistol in the Single Stack Div? Or is that more 1911's and nothing else? Even the 10 round for the P239 is a single stack Mag.

Thank you very much Jim for all your time and information. It is tough for a person starting out to understand and know what I can and cant do. I have read the rule book, but a bunch of that is 'Greek' to me. Thanks
