Thanks, I missed that one. My original draft had it, but it didn't make it into the post. Go figure...

A little off topic, but I for one laugh at the .50BMG law here in CA. It's legal to own and shoot one, but it's not legal to buy them or buy .50BMG ammo.

MG's in Massachusetts

Yes, full auto's are "allowed" in Mass, but you first have to convince your local PD to issue you a permit to possess a machine gun, commonly called a "green card" here. And the permits have to be renewed.
Some PD's issue, many will not. The last I heard, there were approx. 1200 green cards issued across the entire state. I used to have one.

Quack, you are correct, sir. I'm sorry I missed it. Silencers are legal in Mississippi as of 7/2000, but they must be registered with the state.

Mods, please update my original post to reflect this revelation....

I think suppressors may be allowed in Michigan. Two websites showed them as allowed, and an older one (2000) still said no suppressors. But the NRA state laws site does not seem to say anything about suppressors. http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/MISL.pdf

If you can find out it would be great.

PS I just found this while looking for laws on suppressors. I may have been wrong when I said that one would need an FFL for a machine gun.

According to Cmu.edu you must have a FFL to own a machinegun in Michigan, and suppressors are not allowed.

Edit: I searched Michigan law and found this document . I searched that document and found that it is illegal in the state of michigan for anyone not duly licensed by the state of Michigan to own a silencer. It also states that there is no current provision that allows for licensing of such an item.

You can own MGs in MI. It used to be that only C&R MGs were allowed and a C&R FFL was required. A recent Attorney General opinion has opened up MI to all registered MGs. We are awaiting an opinion regarding sound suppressors.

The NF covers a lot more than machine guns and suppressors. Prior to passage in 1934, H&R made single shot pistols in .410 and 28 bore mostly with 12" barrels and no choke - Handy Guns.

Duly registered in 1934, I had to list a reason for owning it and I said I was a "gun collector". I was nearly 8 years old.

Now it's legal to own a .410 pistol as long as it has rifling in the barrel so it can shoot .45 ammo. In the bureaucratic eyes of the BATFE, that makes it a less dangerous weapon than the ones with smooth barrels.

They still refuse to remove that gun from the NFA list even though they reclassified it as a "Curio & Relic" some years ago!

I am aware of the entire scope of the NFA. The intent of this post was to cover what I believe to be the two most asked about items; Machineguns and suppressors. I considered adding Y/N categories for SBR's SBS's DD's and AOW's but decided just to keep it simple. That is a great looking example of the Handy Gun, by the way. A friend of mine has an Auto Burglar that is just about as nice.
