AK-47 or M-14 (ONLY OPTIONS)
Keep your ARs.
Please. No Interest. Can't stand them. Between ONLY these choices. (No ARs, CETMEs, AUGs or anything else!!!) No other write-in candidates. Again NO ARs or AR-based/styled stuff. Pick from one of the choices given or don't bother. Thanks. And BTW no ARs. What do you pick?

Id say Ak's, while the M14 is usually of superior quality and always more accurate the AK will generaly be more fun to shoot due to the mild recoil, cheaper to shoot with either the 47 or the 74, and have alot of accesories such as rails lately. Lately too, these Ak's being produced are really nice, I dont own an AK but from what I've heard is the Arsenal AK-47's are pretty accurate (althought the AK74 is more acccuarte because of the 5.45) and could be equipped with some nice rails that allow accesories such as lights, grips, or optics.

M14
Just as good as an AK at close range, but with the extra ability to reach out and touch someone. Only downfall is the mag capacity. |

1. depends on what I want it for
2. can I chose any variant of either? if I could pick a socom version than m14 or if I want something for longer range if I have to pick between a 7.62x39 ak47 or a 20" bbl m14 for my only gun then I'll lean more towards the ak47 you should really give us some more details.

Basic versions of each. Just for fun in the collection.

M14, all the way.
That said, it doesn't hurt to own both. |

In 1966 I was issued an M14 and carried it most of three years. Really liked that rifle. Today I have an AK clone because it's a better fit for what I need and the price was right. Love both rifles but my AR is even better.
I didn't vote because there were no selection criteria. The rifles are so different you can't pick one over the other without defining the purpose of the rifle. Also the AR should have been included. |

tough choice
Since you mentioned for fun and the collection, I picked the M14/M1A, as its clearly more valuable money wise, and has a role in target and range shooting as well. (competition)
If I thought I might have to fight w/ one, and full auto was not out of the question, a true AK starts to look more attractive, especially from a veh or in close quarters and urban. The compact M4 is popular because of its size and portability. (yeah, I know, no AR's, but I only mention it for comparison's sake) An m14/M1A, full size is pretty long to corner with and clear rooms. Now, you throw something like a SOCOM or Squad Scout in the equation and it would be a really tough choice. |

Get an AK-47 and a bunch of ammo for the price of an M1A. Also don't forget the AK-74, about the cheapest ammo out there.

With out a doubt, M14.
1. Far more accurate. 2. More powerful cartridge - .308 is a one shot man-killer, large animal killer, and automobile killer. 7.62x39 is multi-shot man-killer only at closer ranges. 3. Long range accuracy 4. Milled steel and walnut beats stamped steel and plastic/cheap wood. 5. m14 will hold its value better. 6. In semi-auto, .308 makes much more sense from a tactical/effectiveness standpoint than 7.62x39. 7. You will get a lot more gun for your money with an M14 than an AK...unless you get some deal on a milled polytech AK for under $800.....which ain't gonna happen. 8. You won't have any problem hunting with an M14. AK is pretty sketchy for hunting anything other than pigs. 9. M14 is for serious business. AK47 is for 3rd world jokers. 10. When all's said and done, GET BOTH!!!! FWIW, I agree with you - the AR15 wouldn't be on my list either. I've got one....never use it and would gladly trade it for a good Polytech M14 with USGI parts. Are we talking class III or semi? Class III, the AK all the way. Single shot, the M1A.

M-14 vs. AK
No contest: Definitely the M-14 rifle over the AK.
The .308 trumps the 7.62x39 round any day of the week (for most any situation you find yourself involved). Besides, it's American made........... |

I'm surprised by the results so far. By "collection" I just mean stuff I own. Resale is an option because I keep my guns. I agree with the guy who posted about a socom model but way too pricey for me.

I put AK, but if it's just for range use then I'd go with the M-1A.

Just for fun in the collection.
If it's just for fun than you can't beat the AK...any AK. p.s.: don't forget the drum mag! |

AK. More multi-purpose imho. The M14 is too heavy, clunky and awkward for me.

Thats easy choice for me. I would pick an M14 over an AK47 any time.
When it comes top knock down power, even though the M14 has more, the AK47 has enough (if you stay inside its performance envelope) so we will call that a wash. Now lets talk about accuracy and range. The M14 can reach way further than the AK. When it comes to accuracy, the AK doesn't even get a place at the table when compared to the M14. If its an either or party, my dates an M14
