Carry While Hunting? Handgunlaw.us Seeking Information (Edited)

Thanks to everyone who has assisted Handgunlaw.us with this Information. It has saved me hours of searching. I have been confirming the information and have info on all the states except for those listed below. I have not been researching states without any info yet. Still confirming. Some will have no law saying you can't. Laws mainly say what you can't do. There are a few states that people have told me Yes you can but I can't confirm it. These may be states that don't have any law against it. It will take a few weeks to sort through it all and get it added to the state pages then more time to get the new pages uploaded to the site.

Again "Thank You!" You have saved me a lot of time. When I know where to look it makes it so much easier.

Here is Info I am not sure about or have not researched yet!

Montana Yes? DNR (I can find nothing in MT law/regs that says you can't)

Idaho No During Primitive Weapons Season. Unknown at other times. (Can't find anything saying you can't at other times. Idaho Fish & Game Hunting Regulations

Handgunlaw.us is going to add info on carrying concealed with your self defense firearm with a permit/license while hunting. Is this legal in your state? A link or Alpha/Numeric citation from your state laws or Regulations would be greatly appreciated if the answer is either yes or no. I believe most of the Laws/Regs on this will be in the game laws. I can find the info but it saves me a tremendous amount of time if I know exactly where to look. Plus I like to give the Alpha/Numeric Citation so people can look up the law and confirm it. Any assistance you could give Handgunlaw.us would be greatly appreciated.

This info will be listed in the Misc Information Section like this:

Carrying of Concealed Firearm with Permit/License While Hunting? YES or NO (With Law/Reg Alpha/Numeric Citation)

If there are any stipulations like, not when Bow Hunting Etc., it will be listed also.

Thank you for your help. It is very much appreciated.

In PA you may open carry a revolver while hunting. You my carry a semi-auto or revolver openly or concealed if you have a license to carry a firearm. You may not harvest game with a semi-auto. Many people hunt with a revolver. However you must have either a LTCF or a sportsman's permit to transport a short gun to your hunting location. During transport under a sportsman's permit the revolver must be stored unloaded and the ammo stored in a separate container. Semi-autos are out without a LTCF. There isn't one citation that covers this. Some are hunting laws and other are covered under the uniform firearms act. hopefully someone will come along to ferret out all the laws.

IOWA ... Yes

In Iowa it is legal to carry open and concealed, while hunting ...
Been doing it for years since I ran into problems with a pack of feral dogs. ...
However, as in Ohio, cannot be used to dispatch a wounded animal unless it's during the handgun season and subject to it's restrictions. ...

Be Safe !!

TX Yes, with three minor caveats in the hunting regulations, from "Means & Methods".
Quote:
Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.
Since handguns are not allowed, concealed handguns are not allowed by extension, although AFAIK a turkey hunter can still legally carry one- he or she just can't shoot at a turkey with it.
Quote:
...a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds...
Same thing here.
Quote:
Archery and Crossbows (see Artificial light in Restricted Methods section)
• Only the archery and crossbow equipment prescribed in this section may be used for taking game animals or game birds. Archery and crossbow equipment may not be used to hunt deer during the Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season. It is unlawful to be in possession of a firearm while hunting with a broadhead HUNTING point during the Archery-Only season, except a person licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas may carry a concealed handgun.
<emphasis mine>

Same basic idea- the hunter can carry it, but he or she isn't allowed to fire it at the game animal.

Info from here:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...al/hunt/means/

As far as I can tell, other than these restrictions, it is entirely legal for a TX CHL holder to hunt game using his or her concealed handgun, with the proper hunting license and endorsements of course.

In NY, you are considered to be using the firearms for hunting, so it must meet the requirements for a hunting legal handgun.

During archery season for deer, you may not carry any firearm at all.

During regular firearms season for deer/big game, the minimum barrel length for a handgun is 5 inches and your SD firearm must meet that requirement to be carried in the field. It is also illegal to carry a firearm with a capacity of more than six rounds unless the barrel is less than 8 inches. So if you're carrying the state legal 10 round auto, you must have a barrel length between 5 and 8 inches.

The 5 inch minimum rule is buried somewhere in a different reg. I always have trouble finding it but it's in there somewhere.

During "muzzleloader" season, no modern firearms are allowed, basically same rules as archery season.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html

Quote:
Manner of Taking
It is unlawful to:

Take big game while the deer or bear is in water.
Possess a firearm of any description when bowhunting or when accompanying a person bowhunting during special archery seasons.
Make, set or use a salt lick on land inhabited by deer or bear.
It is unlawful to hunt big game with:

A firearm or bow aided by any artificial light or a laser that projects a beam toward the target.
An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches.

Arkansas: Yes.

The Arkansas Code Annotated is silent on this issue. The regulations of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are not. The overview is given first and several examples are given below. I found a few regs that I didn't post, but they all seem to follow the same pattern.

Quote:
Concealed Weapon Permit Holders
Concealed weapon permit holders may carry a modern handgun, except in places where otherwise prohibited under federal, state or local law or where not allowed by the landowner. Concealed weapon permit holders are not allowed to use their concealed weapon for any hunting purpose. All concealed handgun permit holders must identify themselves to a wildlife officer when complying with an inspection pertaining to birds, fish, game or other wildlife resources.

Al Norris,

You are welcome and thank you. I enjoy doing this. Been 16 years at it now and it is getting easier. Software makes it easier. States are posting more info. But what makes it the easiest are people like you and those on your board that give me feedback. I can find info but when I get a heads up on exactly where to look it saves me a lot of time. Saving 10 minutes on each state saves me almost 10 hours of searching for 50 states so you can see how much your assistance means. I just got an email about Colorado and how long their training is valid. It is tips like that that make my task a whole lot easier. Thanks to everyone for their help. It is very much appreciated.
