The original 3-round "moon" clips and the subsequently developed "full moon" and "quarter moon" clips can be a bother to load and unload (specially if you forget to bring that special tool along). But, to my way of thinking, it's a whole lot easier than policing up just your brass from the deck of a dimly lit indoor range.

BigJim, Here's what I take in my range bag for the full moon clips. Some wood scraps, fancy headed upholstery tacks, 454 Casull (or similar) cases and you're ready to go…

I will cast another vote for the Ruger P-90! It's reasonably priced, durability like a tank, feeds most anything and reliable. It might be a little large for concealment, but it will go bang everytime the trigger is pulled.

It would be a great range/home defense pistol!

( I love crawling around on my hands and knees picking up my brass / and I pick up a few thousand cases dropped by somebody else too -----).

Maybe I don't like moon clips because nobody has really shown me the tricks ....(you old guys know all the tricks ..)

Plus One Worth.The HP does feel great in the ahnd-I got three-a IIIS,a Capitan,and a .30 Luger.
The S&W 22-4 is a great 45 ACP/AR revolver-classic N Frame lines.Sorta like a heftier 38/44 HD.

My favorite .45 ACP handgun is not an auto: The S&W 625

Some auto suggestions:
CZ 97B
FEG GKK
H&K USP

If you can find one, the FEG will be well under $300. It's similar to a 1st generation S&W auto. Pro-Mag used to offer magazines for this model, which will usually work. I wish I had kept mine as a "beater."

I have a Kimber 4" 1911, but my favorite .45 is Ruger's P345. Slim, lightweight, eats anything, light recoil, very easy to carry. You won't go wrong with the P345.

I recently purchased an FNP 45 USG to replace my 1911 as my night stand gun. It has quickly become my range, night stand, and woods gun. It is by far the softest shooting 45 I have ever shot. I own a 1911, owned a Glock 21, have shot an XD 45, and this is the best of all of them. The trigger is phenomenal.

Buy one. You'll end up wanting another.

The Firestar 45acp, which I regret selling every time I think about it. I qualified for my CHL with it, perfect score.Even carried it for while, till I developed a limp.All stainless construction, would shoot 3.5" groups at 25 yds all day long, freehand.The heavy weight tamed recoil, ate any kind of ammo I fed it...

A .45 ACP revolver makes sense if you want to keep one cenerfire ammo type around for practice with either semiautomatic or revolver platforms. I have two S&Ws, M25-2 and a M1917. Lots of fun and very serious weapons in their own right, accurate and powerful.

And moon clips are a great convenience, not a hindrance.
