Best 10/22 aftermarket barrel for around $200?
Hi, looking to purchase a new bull barrel for my build. Interested in the Whistle Pig line, as they're matte black is gorgeous, and they ship to Canada.
but, after doing lots of reading and research im getting the impression the reason people go with Whistle Pig is for hunting and cause they're extremely lightweight, 1oz per inch! and the fact they have the most choices and color combos than any other barrel manufacturer. Im not a hunter, and plan to use this gun mostly for bench shooting. I want a matte black 18 " barrel, with a bentz chamber for around $200, the barrel has to be extremely accurate. less than 1/2" at 50 yd. any suggestions for a barrel that would fit in that category? -18" -matte black -bentz chamber -around $200 Thanks ps. how are Green Mountain barrels in comparison regarding accuracy to the WP? i know WP look nicer, but heard tons of people say WP shoot better, also heard tons of people say GM shoot better. hmmm

I LOVE my Special Order Ruger Barrel
Yeah it did cost $37.00 far more than most after MKT barrels are worth but it shoots better then most men can shoot it! I suppose If I charged $300 for it the 'Marksmen' that bought it would claim it shot much better! Fishing lures The average 10-22 will nail a ground squrille at 125 yards given a good trigger a bedded (FACTORY) barrel and a decent scope Last edited by kenno; December 14, 2010 at 11:19 PM. Green Mountain are pretty highly regarded for the price point, just got one for mine after reading many positive reviews.

I've been looking at both the ER Shaw barrel and the Green Mountain, both are really nice with bentz match chambers. The only problem im finding is not being able to find these barrels in Canada. I am also having a lot of trouble finding manufacturers that will ship these barrels across the border. Most require import fees and papers and way too many hoops to jump through. Anyone know of good Canadian sites that sell bull barrels.
It drives me crazy seeing the prices of 10/22 products being sooo cheap in the U.S compared to Canada.

How are the Shooter's Ridge barrels that Cabelas's sells? There's a Cabela's in Winnipeg(according to the Cabela's website), so I assume getting a barrel shipped from Cabela's wouldn't be a problem. Just blued and stainless though--no matte black. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoot...D0&Ntt=10%2F22
Another place you might check out is the Gun Kings website. I don't know if they ship to Canada, but they carry several lines of barrels. http://www.gunkings.com/ |

Vol 22 number 6 of "Machinist Workshop" has a very good "how to" article on this. |

NOTE:
Most match barrels I have dealt with are very picky about ammo. They will not eject the cheep stuff. So keep that in mind if you are planning on shooting a lot. Doug |

My Green Mountain 10/22 barrel (bentz chamber) won't reliably eject one type of ammo: relatively expensive Federal Gold Medal Match.
Everything else: subsonic, standard velocity, bullets in bulk boxes, etc cycles just fine through it. |

I'm no expert, but I tried the Shooters Ridge from Cabelas. Mine turned the gun into a 1/2" shooter at 50 yards. Not saying they are the best, but mine is about as accurate as I can shoot.
I liked that gun so much I tried to put together another rifle with a Butler Creek barrel that I bought from a local gunshop. It was terrrible. 2" groups at 50 yards were about the best it would do. It is gone. |

Thanks for all the info guys. I have finally found a barrel! I contacted Green Mountain and they emailed me with the only GM barrel distributor in Canada. A small shop located near Vancouver B.C, ironically my home town! I contacted the owner. turns out he has 18 inch fluted stainless barrels that he will coat with matt black GunKote for me for free. The barrel is $195.00 a good deal in Canadian terms. You Americans are so lucky with your guns/parts availability! Thanks again.

I read an interesting article in a gun rag years ago, so you can take this for what it’s worth.
The author bought a new 10/22 just for this test. He then bought 4 or 5 aftermarket “match grade” barrels. Test fired all barrels, including the factory barrel for 50 yard group sizes. Of course, every aftermarket barrel performed better then the factory barrel. He then took the bolt and machined it to the proper head space, and surfaced the chamber end of the factory barrel to tighten it up, to a certain type of match grade ammo. Re-did the 50 yard group size tests. The reworked factory barrel moved from last place to second place. Only one aftermarket barrel out performed the reworked factory barrel. Morel of the story…. The Ruger factory barrels are very nice if everything is tightened up to proper specs. Since he had his own machines to do the work, he got a match grade set up on his Ruger for free. |
