How to trap a coyote?

One has been hanging in the subdivision about a month. I've seen it once 4 houses away. Neighbors have seen it next door, 2 houses away (twice), and strolling up the stret in front of my house (twice). It does not seem to be afraid of people. I believe my Dachshund (13 lbs) who loves my chain linked fence backyard, is at risk. I now escort him when outside and go armed. Would a cayote really jump my fence and attack my dog with me around?

City Animal Control agreed to set a baited cage trap. Not sure of his experience since he asked me about placement, etc. That's why I'm asking you guys. What's an effective trapping technique?

Place trap where coyote has been known to frequent.
Note: Probably 10 cats will be caught before the yote.
Then use cat for yote bait.

Cage traps can be fun. You'll catch all sorts of critters that were probably never imagined to be living in your yard. Seriously though, Coyotes are typically easy to trap.

easy to trap, we use old bacon grease to trap or pour on rocks and shoot. yhey also love smoked oysters and sardines

Exactly how do you trap them or hunt them? What kind of trap? We have them here and I occasionally shoot one out of dumb luck but I've always wanted to trap or hunt them and put a real dent in their population.

i use foothold traps. you have to look up what the regulations are for wherever you live and you have to have a trapping licens (if your going to use a foothold that is). If you get the opportunity or have the space i would just try and shoot it. Paying for all the equipment, license, and going through the class would be a hassle just for 1 dog.

Putting a dent in the population might not happen unless you get the whole population or a sizable chunk. Coyote go into over-drive breeding when the population is stressed. So the more you kill the faster they breed.
Think of it as a race between your ability to shoot and their ability to produce pups.

just get a roadrunner, they secrete some kind of scent that makes coyotes exponitionaly dumb and easy to blow up using Acme missles

I know they outlawed leg traps (STEEL) YOU have too use snares in Fl. but see if you can get a cage trap for yoteis Exspenceve if in rual area 22LR CCI QUICK SHOCKS no over penatrate GOOD LUCK

Guy that processes my deer is also runs a "nuisance wildlife removal" service. He will usually trap yotes for free because he gets more money selling them to fox hunters. He also swears by leg hold traps for yotes as they typically aren't dumb enough to be fooled by the big cage traps.

May want to call around and see if there's someone offering a similar service where you live. My guy is in the yellow pages here and does a good business getting yotes off of sheep and cattle farms and squirrels out of attics

Alert any neighbors who are home during the day, and when Ol' Wily is seen, just run out and yell at him. A few people doing that with any sort of regularity and he'll find other territory.

Well 10 days into the trapping and no luck. The coyote is still hanging around. Neighbors are tuned into the effort. Turned the cage opening so he could come straight in from downwind of the predominate wind direction. Spicing up the cornish hen bait regularly with grease from some fried up smoked hog jowl. Man that stuff smells good. Hadn't eaten it myself yet. Also brushed-up the cage with some limbs and leaves around the outside and top.

Guess he/she is smarter than me.

i highly doubt youll get him with the cage trap. theyre a hell of alot smarter than that.

This is exactly right. It might enter the trap if it's large enough, but it's very doubtful.

Steel traps or snares work a lot better. Flat sets and dirt hole sets with live leg-hold traps have caught many a coyote. The only problem with using them around settled areas is that you're likely to catch the neighbor's cat or dog before you catch the coyote. It's easy enough to release them, if you're using a proper trap that won't break their leg, but releasing them is sort of useless if the coyote (or a hawk, or...) finds a cat in the trap first.

If everyone kept their pets home, the problem would be easy to solve. Unfortunately, many of them don't.

study up on trapping a little. get yerself a couple good montgomery traps with offset jaws and a double spring conversion and go to town with a couple dirthole sets. last year i took 15 coyotes off of 125 acres with simple dirtholes. youll never get him with that cage trap

Watch your dog they will take a small dog or cat fast. A friend lost two small beagles a few years ago to them. When I trained my hunting dogs I always carried a gun after spotting one trying to get close to my dogs. Where I had lived in NY they really got out of hand

In my experience almost anything is easier to trap than a savy coyote. jd

+1 on the not easy to trap. i had an old male last year that would walk my trapline at night and set off all my traps. hed play around and find a stick or a dirt clod to drop on the pan. he thought it was all kinds o fun. then i made an offset trap about 2 feet from the dirtole... he wasnt too happy bout that one
