First deer I ever shot at was with a .30-30 and it well dead in its tracks. I was so excited I shook for 30 minutes after the shot.

First shot was 80yds iron sights, using remington sluggers. The slug took out the heart and lungs. Then followed up with some remington 00 buck. The big doe folded up within 30yrds.Now I use a scoped browning A-5.With winchester super x slugs.

My first deer kill was with a Ruger 44 carbine in 1967. In the current Cocodrie Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. It was the Reeves camp at the time. Deerwent about 40 steps and fell over dead. I shot him at 20 steps.

First deer was killed with a 1903 Springfield 30-06 with peep sights. It was in S. D. prairie, I had the sight set at 500 yds. and nearly blew its front leg off just above the knee so I'm guessing it was out about 600 yds. In 1972 I didn't know anything about ballistics or deer hunting, trailed that deer a mile befor it bleed out. No way I would take a shot like that now even with a good scope. Wish I still had that .06, my brother bought it for me through the mail in the early 60.s when you cold still do that. I think he payed $35. for it, you can't buy the bolt for that much now.

00-BUCK
About Humpteen years ago with A Springfield 12guage pump using double 00 Buckshot. Sprayed him good, he only ran about fifty yards. Shotguns was all we could use back then, man I like it much better today.

Winchester model 94 in .30-30
About 30yds on a doe. Went through the ear making a nice .3" hole for the tag and took out the brain stem. Dead before she hit the ground. |

is a 1970 Chevy Impala considered a rifle?? let see, 31,500,000 Grain bullet at about 100 FPS. Really smashed up the deer. The bullet was reuseable.
Seriously though. First deer was with a bow. As a kid, most of my shooting was done with a 303 British. |

Hamour: That is an awesome picture. I like the nostalgic look of the clothing and haircuts. How old were you in that picture? 10?

22-250
I was 14. I owned two guns a Rem. 870 LW in 20ga 3" mag and a Win. pushfeed 22-250. This was the last day of season around noon. Made up my mind I would shoot the first deer I saw. My dad said "Whats that?" I pulled up saw a deer in my scope at 100yds put the croshairs on his neck squeezed the trigger and said "It's dead!" . My dad responded "Oh you shot a baby!" while about 7 more deer loped away. That was 1982 and I think I still hold the Nebraska state record for smallest Whitetail Buck! I still have both guns and even with all the others I have I still shoot them best. My 14 year old girl now hunts deer & coyote with that same mod. 70 22-50.

What is an all around
good bullet for deer sized game whitetails and mule deer and pronghorns. Then what is a good one for moose elk and african game. The caliber 300 win mag. I am thinking of federal fusion amo in the 165 boatail for deer sized game and the 180 remingtons new copper tipped bullet for bigger game. Muzzle velocity for the rem copper tipped for the 300 win 3290 and m.e is 3940. They are on midways web page.

22-250 in a ruger mkll, with a simmons scope on top, was a nice 5 pt, that was a bit of a brawler. He was fighting with another buck when dad and I saw him. One shot in the neck, and he dropped like a rock. He had a nice frame, but had broken off some of his tines. I was 15, I still shoot that gun, I saved up for a year to buy it, and now it has a special place in my collection.
That was almost 20 years ago, and I still have those horns on top of my cabinet. |
