45/70 Reloading Questions Powder and Primer
Hi, I have to buy some powder for a 45/70. What kind of powder do you reccomend? I was looking at the Hodgon H4198. Do you think that would be a good powder or if not, what would you reccomend? Also what kind of primer do I want to use? Thanks a lot for the help, Ryan

4198 is a very good powder for the 45-70. I like H322 better for very heavy loads, though. IMR 3031 is also excellent for medium to heavy loads.
As for primers, I use Rem,ington 9 1/2 standard large rifle primers for all of my rifle loads except the belted magnums. (Remington 9 1/2 M for those) I've used nothing but Remington primers in all of my reloading, both rifle and pistol for over 25 years and never had a primer related problem.

Deerhunter, If you are just starting with the .45-70, 4198 is the way to go because it will cover such a wide range and uses relatively small charges. Chey is right about 3031 and H-322 for the very heavy loads, but that's not the place to start.
I don't think it matters which of the 4198s you choose, but pick one and stay with it because there can be small differences. |

I have used a lot of 4198 in my 45-70 also but I have found for my rifle that 3031 seems to produce better accuracy. I would guess that 4198 and 3031 are the 2 most popular powders used (at least from what I have seen). I have loaded some 4064 also in heavy loads that make your eyes water. I do like the 4198 with lighter bullets but most of what I load are 405 and 500 gr bullets anymore. The light weight's don't seem to shoot as well in my gun. As far as primers go, I have tried Win, Rem and CCI, they all work but it seems that the CCI work better for me as far as accuracy goes. I only have had 1 primer fail to fire in 45 years of reloading and I sometimes wonder if somehow, in a fit of stupidity, I had loaded a fired one in the case without noticing. I would buy 100 of each brand and try them out to see which one does the best for you in your gun then stick with them.
