A good used, police trade-in .40 S&W Sig of most any model. My favorites are the P229 or P226 in .40 or 9mm if you're recoil sensitive. The .40's, especially, have been turning up, used, as law enforcement re-adopts the 9mm for use by smaller statured LEO's. YMMV, Rod

Canik fits your requirements. I paid $235 for a TP9SF recently. Used, but very slightly so. It's a shooter! The only loads it didn't like was a 147 grain load that I loaded long. All other handloads and factory that I tried ran perfectly and shot the center out of the bull at 25 feet. Liked it so much I went and bought their race gun, the TP9SFX.

You’ve described a sizable number of my accumulation of 9mm’s, practically all used, including:

Walther P38 - $300
Beretta M1951 = $285
CZ 75 - $298
Star Super B - $300
Hi-Point C9 -$172
S&W 6906 - $295
Kel Tec P11 - $176
Kahr CW9 - $271
Kahr CT9 - $255
SIG P250 - $292
S&W 59 - $260
Walther CCP - $287 (haven’t had it long enough to speak on reliability yet)
SIG P226 (DAO) - $260

All except the Hi Point (new from a LGS) were from Gunbroker, & costs listed include shipping and FFL fees. And that list spreads over the last five years. Time, patience, & persistence pay off. Some have a trigger pull that doesn’t suit everybody, some have wear from use, but I like them all, and the ones on this list are reliable and accurate.

What is posted above. If you are patient and haunt Gunbroker consistently, you can find some very good deals. At the moment, randomly sitting on the couch next to me because I bought new holsters for them, are a Kel-Tec P11 that I won for a $165 bid, and a Smith & Wesson 915 that I won for a $245 bid.

I got them both recently. The S&W seems to be a police trade-in that is quite accurate and totally reliable as of three range trips. I picked up the Kel-Tec today. The trigger seems a bit stiff, but I will field strip it, lube it up, and see how it does next week.

I am getting to where I won't really consider a handgun that costs $300 or more. There are just too many good deals out there for less. My Ruger P90 was something like $200 OTD (another police trade-in, apparently), and it is an extremely good shooter. I see no reason to pay more.

Many used options. Occasionally you will find police trade glocks for the 300ish range. I've seen Beretta 92fs police trades at 300.

New? The s&w sd series are more or less reliable and accurate. There is a quality feel and style factor they lack, but they're good guns. Canick or TriStar cz75 clones are found in the 300 range, but they are hard to find these days. Sar B6P can be found for a tad over 300. I have experience with the TriStar/canick cz75 clone. A friend of mine has one and it shoots like a dream. The rest I have heard great things about but have no trigger time on.

Get a Hi-point 9mm

Given how you plan to use the gun, nightstand or truck gun I think you'll be happy with a Hi-point 9mm. I've owned two. The first one had to be serviced for stove piping, but came back to me quickly with extra sights and an extra magazine. It was my HD gun for a while. The second one ran flawlessly from day one. They have a life time guarantee and can take a lot of abuse. At SD distances they are plenty accurate. Lot of people think they are ugly and I have to confess I moved up to a Beretta. But for the $$$ there is a lot to like in a Hi-point.

Life is good.

Being a cheapskate, my first handgun was a $125 Hi-Point in 9mm. It shot fine but it was heavy and ugly. I upgraded to a S&W SD9VE for $289.99. It shoots great with no malfunctions in 600-900 rounds.. However, I saw a Taurus PR111 G2 for $199.99 and I bought it (I also have 2 older Taurus with no issues). It has around 800 flawless rounds now. I prefer the PT111 G2 to my other guns because it is more accurate for me and has a shorter barrel than the SD9VE. I no longer have the Hi-Point the I still have the other two. They both fit the same holster. I would buy the Taurus again with no qualms.

Just picked up a surplus CZ75B for ~$300.

Pretty sure it will meet those requirements.

I just shelled out $900+ for a Colt 1911 Government Competition but, I don't think I needed to spend near that much for a good, reliable, accurate gun. $300 isn't all that cheap these days. Lots of good reliable and accurate guns in that price range. $150 or less is what I would consider cheap.

I have a Taurus G2 and SCCY cpx 2, both have been flawless and about $200. If I was just starting out, I would seriously consider the Ruger EC9

why don't you use what you carry now for the nightstand and truck?

Cheap, reliable and accurate? A Sig P250 incompact. A very under rated handgun. I have 3 of them and can shoot ragged holes all day long.
