I have a Rem Mdl 700 that I have started loading rounds for. I used a Stoney Point OAL gauge to get the bullet close to the rifling. I have used this method with everything from .223 - 30-06. However, I can't seem to seat the bullets OUT long enough to come close to the rifling. Is this normal for .308 WIN? If so, why? Or is this just Remington? Help....please!

What bullet are you using?
I was making a load with Sierras 155gr HPBT Palma Match, when I got them close to the rifling they was barely gripped by the case mouth. Backed in a bit and they seem to do fine if not exceptionally good. |

I have tried Hornady 150 gr Interlock, 150 gr SST's, Nosler 150 gr Ballistic tip, and Sierra 168 gr BTHP Matchkings. Like you said, when they touch the rifling, there is barely enough for the mouth to grip. I guess I will just have to set them deeper.

Years ago I had a Remmington 700 ADL in 270 that I used the "long throat" method for seating bullets.
I now have an older [pre MARK-II] Ruger 77 in 30-06 that has your short chamber. It shoots a 1/4 inch group, seated at the canalure. I don't worry about it. |

I like to be able to put my rounds in my magazine if I want. My magazine measures 2.800". I have not yet tried loading them just off the lands and single loading them. Is accuracy really improved that much? I guess when hunting I could single load the longer round with a couple of shorter rounds in the magazine.

Per my answer to the same question, under "The Art of the Rifle", I've loaded both 165 Ballistic Tips and 168 Sierras for a friend's .308 VS. I seat them .010" off the lands, with an o.a.l. of 2.990". I don't know whether they'll fit his mag or not, but they do shoot one-hole groups.

Thanks alot for all you guys answers. I posted on two different forums and the concensus is all the same. Set them out as far as you can go to still fit in the box magazine. I thought it was just a little wierd since I don't have this problem with my other Remingtons.
