Throat increase

I have a Sako Model 75 stainless in .338WM. It has a .375H&H action length. When I seat the bullets to the rifling I still have .30 of an inch space in the removalable magazine. I would like to increase the throat length so I can seat the bullets further out and take advantage of the longer mag. length. Anyone have an opinion or suggestion about this?

Most reamer makers have throating reamers just for this, see your smith.

short throat

I noticed the same thing with my Sako (7REMMAG). Talked to tech from Sierra and was told that they actually got better results with short throated chambers. With magnums, you will burn out the leade soon enough. Then you can have your smith ream the worn throat out a bit. If it shoots OK I'd leave it be.

Throats

Thanks, Addecus, I will take your suggestion. I really like those Sakos. It's to bad they cost so much. I can't get any Sako scope mounts. I want a low set for my 30-06. Do you know of a source? I e-mailed Beretta but they won't or haven't answered. I tried using Leupold. but I popped off two base screw heads. Good shooting,

I've been shooting the '06 since 1950; no Weaver mount has ever given me trouble. Never had a screw break, nor come loose. The present set has been on my Weatherby for thirty years...

FWIW, Art

Scope mounts

Thanks Art, I've always considered Weaver mounts to be sorta second class. Guess I need to give them more respect.

Marshall;

I am surprised that you broke ofv the screw heads on a Leupold Scope mount. I have a Winchester 70 in .375H&H with a Leupold 1.2-5x Vari III scope and mounts and have not had any problems. Maybe the screws were not tight enough? or the scope is heavier than mine???

I use Leupold mounts on my Sako. I was glad to see that someone in the US made made mounts for the Sako. Be sure that the heads are on the left side because of the tapered dovetail.

Leupold mounts

Thanks, Guys, I had a Weaver Grand Slam 2.5-10 on my .338 Sako. I'll try the Leupold mounts on my 30-06 and see how they work.
