back when I 1st got into guns ( my FIL was grooming me to take over his collection ) I was going to buy one handgun, & one rifle, & borrow anything else I might need... my choices back then were a 4" 357 Magnum, & a 243...
I know alot more now a days... 243 would be too light for my "do it all cartridge" today... I do really like these 6.5 X 55 7-08 7 X 57 but I'm actually going to be buying another hunting rifle ( stainless ) in 270, only because it is also at least as good as the others, & I inherited a ton of 270 cases & loading components

.280 Ackley Improved . . . probably the best all-around rifle cartridge for the lower 48.

I picked 6mm Remington, but then I have a 30-06 also. For only one, I'd probably pick .270.

243 for anything I would use it for
From prairie dogs to mule deer. 243 gets the job done.
For the hand loader such a huge selection of bullets to choose from. Light, lightning fast 55 grainers to 107's for the target shooters. Nosler partitions for deer and larger animal hunters. It's all there. |

Since I have a .223 Rem and a .270 Win, That combination will cover most shooting and hunting that I do, especially with handloads. So why, you ask, do I own 3, .243 Win rifles? Because they fill a need for a wind-bucking, low recoiling large varmint/range rifle. It bucks wind and hits hard. One can also see dirt fly on near misses, not like the .22-250 and .223 rounds.
When shooting my first .243, I was very impressed with the power of the cartridge, compared with the .22 centerfires. Using 80 grain Hornady GMX bullets, it's a formidable deer round to about 250 yards and is used by the grand-kids with good results. No, a person just can't own one rifle in a caliber that great. |

mine is the 243, 7.62x51 necked down to 6mm, plenty of power for people, deer, blackbears, more suited to long rang shooting than most and easy to find ammo.

.308 Win./7.62x51mm NATO
It'll put down anything I could reasonably see myself shooting at, it's not as cheap as 5.56 but it's cheaper than most hunting rounds so I can afford to practice and have fun with it. And that extra bang and push that it has is just so much more satisfying to me than 5.56

I'm not sure that I 100% understand the point of this thread. If your looking for a versitile, do all cartridge whilst excluding the ones on the list, I would have to choose the .270 winchester. If your looking for a good, split the difference caliber to fill the hole between .223 and .30-06, take the 7.62X39.
If you are looking for a versitile, do it all cartridge, why exclude the .30-06? And if you already have one, why bother getting another cartridge to do the same job? |

There is no point to the thread, like 80% of most threads on most forums.
'Just curious as to what people like in power between a .223 and .30-06. Although now that I think about it, I should have made it a poll. Some people will go small and fast (.243), others will choose big and slow (7.62x39 or .30-30), and others will pick something right in the middle. No rules. |

I wouldn't call 7.62x39 or .30-30 "big"
