I've got a mdl 60 j frame (no dash) with serial # R229XXX. When was it made? Any other interesting info?

As I understand it, the +p designation came along at 60-4...?
1979. As far as the +p rating, the 60-4,-5,-6,-7 and -8 were all introduced in 1990 but only the -4,-7 and -8 were +p rated. With -9 and up, they built on the magnum frame.

Tell me more about my 629-4...

I have a stainless 3" 629-4 in .44 magnum with what looks like a factory Houge grip. Serial number is BRU7xxx. Can someone tell me when it was made or anything else about it?

~1994.

There was a special run of 3" 629's in 1994 called the Backpacker. It was product code 130450 if you have the original box to verify.

D7406XX = 1975

I recently acquired a S&W model 38 with serial #J6870XX. Would be very appreciative if you could tell me year of manufacture and anything else of interest.

Thanks in advance

Assuming you took the numbers off the bottom of the grip butt and there were no letter prefixs (C,D or K), 595XXX would make it a 38 Military and Police, Model of 1905, 4th Change. Serial numbers ran from 241704 in 1915 to 758296 in 1942.

WOW!

Thank you very much!

Yeah, no prefixes.

Just 595xxx on the bottom of the butt grip in the metal!

It's got a really cool extremely old looking leather holdster too.

What's 4th change mean?

Is it worth a lot of money?

Or worth more keeping as a family heirloom?

Is it Antiques Roadshow worthy?

Or more like just personally cool in the family?

The "change" number refers to engineering changes made to the gun during it years of production. The original Model of 1905 ran from 1905 to 1906, the 1st change from 1906 to 1909, 2nd also ran from 1906 to 1909 with minor changes, 3rd from 1909 to 1915 and 4th from 1915 to 1942.
As with any collectable, condition is very important. Value can range from $200 in only good condition to over $1200 in like new with original box and accessories.
Since it's being passed down to you from your grandfather I would not part with it.

Unfortunately there is a big gap at that serial number range.
AHC in Jan 86 to AVB in July 87 is as close as the book gets. But I would guess that AHL would be pretty early in 86.
