Nothing special, other than being a very nice revolver, and yours should be P&R, which makes it somewhat more desirable than later production. As you may know, it's the stainless version of the very highly regarded Model 19.

P&R refers to "pinned" and "recessed." Originally, S&W revolvers had a small pin through the top of the frame securing the barrel, and on the magnum and rimfire calibers the cylinders were counterbored to the diameter of the cartridge rim so that the case head fit flush with the back of the cylinder. There's a good photo of these and other S&W identifying characteristics here. In 1982, these features were eliminated as a cost saving measure (rimfire cylinders are still recessed). S&W collectors, even casual collectors like me, tend to be willing to pay more for P&R era revolvers, in part because they ain't making them that way any more (certainly true) and in part because some feel the products were of better quality back then (debatable).

It looks like I have a stainless 4 inch bbl S&W Model 66 .357 Mag made in 1981 that is pinned and recessed with adjustable sights, square butt, 3 screw frame with a .265 sevice stell hammer nose mounted firing pin and smooth wood grips.
It is in very good shape. Does it sound like a good deal at $400 ? Last edited by hammerheadaj; May 14, 2012 at 03:17 PM. |

Have you tried contacting Customer Service at H&R? They've been part of Marlin since 2000, so I don't know what they might have in the way of records on older serial numbers, but you might get lucky and find someone who's willing to help you. www.hr1871.com

Are you anywhere near Lake Maggiore? I was there in March on the way from Zurich to Aosta - beautiful area.

I inherited a S&W .357 magnum from my grandfather a few years ago. He had the gun for over 40 years that I know. I cannot find a model number but I find 2 different numbers on the inside of the cylinder opens.
S 164440 77286 Any assistance in dating this gun is appreciated. Thanks, |

Your number would date the gun to the 1956-57 period, and there were only two N-frame .357s being manufactured at that time: the .357 Magnum Model of 1950 and the Highway Patrolman. These became the Model 27 and Model 28, respectively, when S&W started using model numbers in 1957. They're essentially the same gun with different finishes. The pre-Model 27 was the fancier of the two, with a highly polished finish and fancy checkering on the topstrap; the pre-Model 28 had more of a satin finish and lacked the checkering. So, putting all that together, you've got a pre-27 or pre-28 from 1956 or perhaps early 1957. It should be straightforward to determine which, and either way it's a real desirable piece if in good condition.
