H&R .22 - help

I know it is manufactured by H&R (says so on the barrel).
I know it uses .22 long rifle ammo ONLY (says so on the barrel).
I know it has a slot on the under side with a post that you push back with your finger to open the bolt (never seen one like that before).
I know it takes a magazine, because there is a slot for one that feeds into the underside of the bolt.
I know it is dirty/dusty and need cleaning (grin).

That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge. Can anyone else help?

H&R basically made 4 .22 auto loaders of which I have pictures of 2 of them and yours doesn't look exactly like either of them.
It shares some features of each of the two models, but it may actually be the third model that I can only guess about since you don't have the magazine to determine how many shots it holds.
That would be the Model 165 with a 10 shot magazine made from 1945 - 61.
The 2003 Blue Book doesn't give a weight for the Model 165 or any other information except values.

The other models are the Model 150 Leatherneck Carbine and the Model 65 Military Autoloading Rifle which was a USMC training rifle for the Garand. Because of the similarity of model numbers between the Model 65 and Model 165 and the unique magazine release and both having 10 shot magazines, I think that's what you have.
The 4th autoloader Model 151 is a Model 150 with a Redfield rear sight.
So I'm betting that yours is a civilian version of the Model 65 that's like a cross between it and the lighter Leatherneck Carbine barrel. The Leatherneck Carbine was lighter at 7.25 lbs. instead of 9 pounds, had only a 5 shot magazine but similar sights to yours. But since the magazine release is different from the Leatherneck Carbine, my best guess is that you have the Model 165.
2003 Blue Book values for the Model 165 (which have probably increased) are:

100% - $120
98% - $110
95% - $95
90% - $85
80% - $70
70% - $55
60% - $60

Using your pictures as a comparison to mine:

It has the same sights as the 150 picture (the scope seems to be a "make do" add on)
It has the same safety, bolt profile, magazine release and "large screw" (located just in front of the magazine area) as the 65 picture

Perhaps the 165 is a mix of both?

If some of the pictures of the 150 are really of a 150, then it isn't a 150. In the "27" picture (sorry it is a bit dark), there is a spot near the rear of the scope where the wood is cut down and there are two screw holes in the barrel. I believe these to be for an original scope mount that was made for the gun.

This post contains pictures of a military 65. It has no front or rear sight, but has a scope mounted using the two holes I speak of. Makes me think it might be a civilian version, maybe a later version when they started using sights, but didn't bother to remake the barrel or stock configuration...?

Using a scale at the house, resting the butt and "holding" the barrel with an open circle made with thumb and first finger, it weighs about 6 lbs.

Here's some detailed pictures of the Model 165. It has the same slot underneath the stock that yours has, but there are differences. So maybe they did make different variations with a sporter barrel and slightly different features over the years.

There’s multiple H&R magazines at Numrich with the same part number except the last digit is one of a series of letters, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. This may be an indication that there were several model designations of models each with slightly separate features. Numrich lists the magazine model number of the Model 165 as having a “C”.

I started breaking it down. I took off the scope and found that there was a H&R Model - 65 marking on the barrel (a bit of rust obscured it so it looked like nothing was there until I took off the scope).
